The passage beyond the broken organ looked simple enough to walk. Black floor plates ran between two narrow walls, and crooked iron nails covered the stone from knee height to the ceiling.
Kael placed one boot on the first plate. The next section slid away before he could transfer his weight, opening a dark gap where solid ground had been.
Behind him, the dead Extraction chamber folded into its own ruin.
RUMBLE!
White ribs collapsed over the organ, and clear fluid ran backward through the cracks. The buried workings pulled red residue and silver-white matter away from Kael’s footprints, hiding what had bled.
Vaela watched the first plate slide away from Kael’s boot instead of the collapsing chamber. "It waits for weight, then pulls the next plate clear. Keep everyone on this landing. I want to see how far the gap travels."
Jaro studied the walls. "I would like one ordinary corridor before I die. It may still kill me, but I would appreciate the courtesy."
Orrek pressed his free hand against the entrance and felt a tremor pass beneath his palm. "The nails are turning toward our feet, and I need enough quiet to hear which plate moves first."
Small clear stones sat inside every nail head. They turned toward Kael as he tested the plate again.
CLICK! CLICK! CLICK!
The second plate moved farther away. Metal hooks dropped from the ceiling and swept through the gap where his foot should have landed.
Kael pulled back before they closed.
Renn tightened the count cloth around his wrist. "The plates moved after they saw his step. We should keep our feet behind the first seam until he finds what is pulling them."
One of the nails turned toward Renn’s voice. Its clear stone widened like an eye, and several others followed.
Orrek shifted his injured shoulder away from the wall. "Stop speaking from one place. Those things are following sound as well as movement."
Jaro moved behind him and lowered his voice. "I saw them turn. I will keep quiet unless a nail pulls free."
Kael stepped onto the first plate and jumped before the second could retreat. The floor slid beneath him while the wall nails pulled his position apart in every watching eye.
Renn saw him land one pace ahead. Orrek saw him strike farther to the left, and the boy with the bowl stared toward the end of the passage as though Kael had already crossed it.
The boy clutched the bowl with both hands. "I cannot tell where he is."
Vaela moved beside him and covered the nearest clear eye with her wrapped blade. "Watch the broken edge of the first plate instead. The nails are changing what you see, but they cannot move the crack Kael left behind."
She angled the blade until Kael appeared in its dull reflection. His body stood closer in the metal than it did to Renn’s eyes.
"The nails are bending what we see, not moving him," Vaela said. "Follow cracks, blood, and damaged metal until those eyes close."
Renn dragged a loose chain link across the plate. It appeared to move away, but its scrape remained beside his fingers. "I can mark the real floor. Anyone who loses the line waits instead of guessing."
Kael felt hooks descending above his next step. Threat Perception Instinct caught the attack before the moving plate opened beneath him, while Metaphysical Resistance found the pressure trying to make the false distance feel real.
The Sovereign Root opened.
Kael chose the two exact attributes he needed to read the attack and keep his body moving through it.
One shard went to Metaphysical Resistance, and the other went to Threat Perception Instinct.

The hooks still hung above him, but Kael could now feel the plate beneath his foot and the false gap pressing at his sight as separate things. He brought his heel down where the second plate should have met the first.
BOOM!
Black stone struck his heel. The hidden gap closed under the impact, and three ceiling hooks snapped loose before they could reach him. Clear fluid leaked from their curved points.
Every wall nail turned toward the broken plate. Thin black threads emerged beneath their heads and pulled at the survivors’ sight again.
Kael drove his fist into the nearest cluster.
BANG!
Iron heads burst around his knuckles. The clear stones popped, and red-black fibers snapped behind them. Everyone saw Kael standing in the same place again.
Vaela entered the opening and cut the exposed threads before they withdrew.
SNAP!
Black fluid ran down the wall. A nail beside Orrek pushed forward without leaving its hole because the stone around it folded closer to his shoulder.
The point pierced his binding.
Orrek grunted and caught the shaft beneath his arm. "The wall is moving the nail toward me. Break the stone beside my hand, not the metal."
Kael crossed the shifting plate and struck where Orrek directed him.
CRACK!
The wall opened around a row of black bellows bound in bronze strands. Each swollen sac pulled a floor plate backward through cords buried under the stone. Smaller clear veins fed the eyes in the nails, changing how far the next plate appeared.
Vaela cut Orrek free and pressed fresh cloth over the puncture. "Keep the shoulder low. The nail missed the joint, but the binding will not hold another pull from this side."
"I can use the chain from my waist," Orrek said. "Give me enough room to keep the plates together while the others cross."
Kael reached into the wall and seized the nearest bellows. It tightened its cords, trying to drag itself beyond his fingers.
Kael crushed the bellows.
SPLAT!
Black fluid and glass dust covered his hand. Three floor plates slammed together, shortening the passage so quickly that everyone on the landing stumbled forward.
Renn touched the first knot on his cloth. "All twenty-one are here. The floor moved toward us, and nobody crossed the entrance seam."
The remaining bellows withdrew deeper into the wall. Their cords pulled loose nails and ceiling hooks after them, leaving several plates locked together.
Kael tore out two more sacs before they escaped.
RIP!
The moving floor buckled. Orrek looped his chain through the exposed cords and braced the links around his waist, holding four plates against one another.
"I can keep this section closed while the first group crosses," he said. "Move the injured people before those bronze strands cut through the chain."
Vaela sent Sova ahead with the ash-lipped woman. Renn changed position after every pair, touching the count cloth to a wrist and guiding each person toward the cracks Kael had exposed. Jaro walked beside the boy and watched the remaining nails instead of reaching for the bowl.
The first woman crossed with both hands raised, expecting the floor to disappear. The plates held. A limping man followed and spat into the broken wall when black fluid dripped near his foot.
The third pair reached the middle when one hidden cord slipped beneath Orrek’s chain. Their plate jerked sideways, opening a gap under the ash-lipped woman’s injured hand as she fell.
Sova caught the back of her clothing. Renn dropped flat at the edge and seized Sova’s wrist before both women slid toward the hooks below.
Kael stepped into the gap. His boot landed on the moving plate with enough weight to stop it against the wall.
THUD!
The stone cracked beneath his heel but remained level. Sova pulled the woman upright, and Vaela covered the injured hand before a wall nail could follow the fresh blood.
"Take the next two steps beside me," Vaela told her. "Sova will hold your waist, and I will keep the hand against your chest until we reach firm stone."
The woman nodded through clenched teeth. Her next step shook, but she completed it without giving the wall a clean sight of the wound.
One bellows inflated above Orrek’s chain. The bronze binding tightened and pulled his waist toward the wall.
Kael drove his shoulder through the stone covering it.
BOOM!
The sac burst against his chest. Orrek regained his footing while Vaela pulled the chain free of the severed cords.
Renn led the last pair across and counted every answer in a voice the walls could not redirect. "Twenty-one people crossed. I can see every one from here."
Vaela rebound Orrek’s shoulder before he released the chain completely. The nail had opened a narrow puncture beside the older tear, and black fluid had stained the outer cloth.
"The joint still moves, but the new hole will split if you lift from the shoulder," she said. "Keep every pull around your waist until I can clean it properly."
Orrek tested the chain with his free hand. "The waist has survived worse work. I can keep moving as long as nobody asks me to look graceful."
Vaela motioned the survivors toward the exposed bellows. "These sacs pulled the floor. The clear eyes only lied about the distance. Watch for swelling cloth and taut cords before you trust a plate."
The limping man rubbed black residue from an exposed cord between his fingers. "I repaired bellows in the upper yard, and these breathe the same way even if they are larger. Give me enough light to see the bindings, and I can warn you before one fills."
Jaro helped the man clean his fingers.
The group moved beyond the damaged plates. Small clicks began beneath the next stretch of floor before anyone placed a boot on it.
TICK! TICK! TICK!
Orrek stopped the line with one raised hand. The black stone ahead no longer moved, but narrow pins waited beneath its surface.
