White stone ribs curved over the final chamber and met above a suspended frame. Dark glass teeth lined the lower walls, while clear vessels crossed the floor and fed a red organ larger than a furnace drum.
The organ beat when Kael entered.
THUD!
Pain answered from every wound in his body. The mark on his palm darkened along the branches running through his wrist, shoulder, chest, knee, heel, and breath.
Jaro stopped at the threshold and stared at the empty cage. "Old crews called the thing made in this frame an Extraction Body. I always hoped the name belonged to something smaller."
Vaela followed the floor vessels to the silver nerves holding the organ above them. "Its body has not formed yet, so watch the frame and keep away from those vessels. Every visible nerve leads back to the large organ."
The organ split down the middle.
SQUELCH!
Long pale limbs unfolded from the opening and locked into the suspended frame. A smooth head formed last, followed by clear eyes over red pupils. The humanoid chest remained open because the larger organ behind it supplied every beat.
The creature stepped onto the floor. Clear vessels tightened beneath its feet and fed silver fluid into the legs.
Orrek moved the survivors behind his damaged shoulder. "The big organ keeps the pale one moving. I will hold the left side while Vaela watches the vessels."
Renn gathered the count cloth in one hand. "Stay close enough to answer me, and keep every foot away from the clear veins on the floor."
The Extraction Body crossed the chamber and placed two fingers against Kael’s chest.
All sound disappeared.
Kael’s body stopped moving together. His shoulder began the punch before his hip turned, and his injured knee bent after his heel had already left the floor. Each part retained its strength, but the broken timing kept his body from reaching the target together.
His fist missed by a hand’s width.
The creature struck his ribs.
CRACK!
Kael slid across a clear vessel. It opened beneath his heel and drew blood from the failed step until he stamped through it.
STOMP!
Clear fluid burst around his foot. The Sovereign Root opened under the force separating one movement into several weaker ones.
Kael chose the four exact attributes needed to bring his body back under one command.
Core Mass Density. Gravity Vector Impact. Regenerative Dominion. Mind Soul Anchor.

The broken rib stayed broken while Regenerative Dominion held the damaged tissue together and Core Mass Density settled more weight through his frame. Mind Soul Anchor kept the command inside him, and Gravity Vector Impact aligned the force from his planted heel to his rising knee.
The unintegrated authority seed braced against the pressure. It remained unstable, but Kael’s next breath reached every part of him at once.
The Extraction Body tilted its head.
Kael drove his knee into its stomach.
THUD!
The strike lifted the creature from the floor and threw it into the frame. Two silver nerves snapped loose from the red organ.
SNAP! SNAP!
The organ beat faster.
THUD! THUD! THUD!
Dark glass teeth opened along the walls. Clear feeding cords whipped around Kael’s arms and legs, pulling each limb in a different direction. One tightened around his wounded shoulder, while another tried to turn his knee away from his planted foot.
A wider cord swept past him and opened above the survivors. Orrek threw his chain around it before the clear mouth could descend over Renn. He took the pull at his waist, keeping the strain below his injured shoulder, but the cord dragged both boots across the floor.
"The chain will not hold for long," he said. "Move everyone behind the broken rib while I keep its mouth turned."
Renn guided the first pair across without releasing the count cloth. Sova took the next two, while Jaro lifted the boy over a floor vessel and returned the bowl before either of them could complain.
Vaela ran beside Orrek’s chain and found the clear cord feeding it from the wall. "Lean back when I cut, because the pressure will vanish before the weight does."
Orrek lowered his hips. Vaela severed the cord.
SNAP!
The loose length struck the floor, and Orrek fell backward with the chain across his chest. Sova pulled him clear before the dark glass teeth closed where his hand had been.
Kael seized the shoulder cord with his left hand and broke the one around his right elbow. He turned with the remaining pull instead of fighting it, carried the rotation through his spine, and drove his heel into the floor.
BOOM!
The cords shattered in a ring around him. Vaela entered the opening and cut one of the silver nerves feeding the creature’s right side.
SNAP!
The organ forced a scream through the humanoid throat.
SCREECH!
Its right arm collapsed. The creature turned toward Vaela with the left hand raised, but Kael struck it before the fingers reached her.
BOOM!
His shoulder drove the Extraction Body across the chamber and cracked three of the white ribs. The creature pressed its remaining hand toward his chest, searching for the place where his movements joined.
Kael caught the fingers between his teeth and bit through them.
CRUNCH!
Hot white fluid filled his mouth. He spat the broken pieces into the organ cage and punched the damaged frame.
BANG!
Metal folded around his fist. The organ pulsed against the dent while the Extraction Body kicked his injured knee.
Kael’s heel shifted before the kick landed, taking the joint out of its path. His shoulder carried the movement into an elbow that struck the creature’s jaw, and his next breath drove his forehead into its face.
CRACK!
The smooth features split from brow to mouth. Red-clear fluid covered the creature’s cheeks, and fear finally appeared in its eyes.
Silver nerves tightened around Kael’s arms and chest. The red organ pulled at his marked palm, wounded shoulder, broken rib, knee, and breath, trying to separate them before he could finish the attack.
Renn stood behind him with blood on his lips. "All twenty-one are still here, Kael. Every person who entered remains behind you."
Orrek braced three survivors against the left wall with his free arm. Vaela kept her blade between a floor seam and the boy, while Jaro held the cracked bowl against his chest and watched the clear vessels near the child’s feet.
Kael took hold of the creature through its open chest. His body carried their voices, his injuries, and the full weight of his next step without losing its timing.
He drove the Extraction Body backward into the red organ.
CRASH!
The open chest sank into the transparent core. Silver nerves tore loose, and clear fluid flooded the cage. Kael followed the creature inside, crushed the lower frame with his heel, and drove his knee deeper through the collapsing body.
His shoulder broke the upper brace. His fist entered the center of the organ.
BOOM!
The organ burst inward around him. White ribs folded toward the cage, dark glass teeth shattered along the walls, and clear cords struck the floor once before going still. Red fluid and silver-white matter fell over Kael in heavy ropes.
SPLAT! SPLAT!
The body slid from his arm in pieces. Its face split against the stone.
Kael remained standing inside the ruined organ. Every wound hurt. Each still moved when he chose. The mark on his palm burned once before settling into a darker branch pattern along the same body paths.
The braced seed shook.
Renn touched each knot and counted through his damaged throat.
Renn worked through every knot on the cloth. He stopped only after a twenty-first voice answered.
Only twenty-one living answers reached him from the ruined chamber.
Far from the chamber, Ivara’s fourth link trembled beneath its brace. The chain held while the metal cut deeper into her wrist. She watched the blood run and smiled.
A final thread of clear fluid crawled from the dead organ toward the lower passage. Kael crushed it beneath his heel.
SPLAT!
Jaro returned the bowl to the boy and watched the dead cords empty into the cracks. "Every room takes something we did to survive and tries to use it against us. I would like to leave before this one teaches the next."
Kael wiped clear fluid from his mouth and watched the last vessel drain toward the lower passage. "They have learned enough about us, and whatever waits below will have the same memories."
Vaela pressed folded cloth against his ribs before he could move. "Something below us is still drawing fluid through the walls, and I need one moment to bind this break. Watch the floor while I work."
The survivors watched the walls and floor while she worked, unwilling to mistake silence for safety.
Renn checked the cloth again and touched the nearest survivor’s wrist. Contact passed down the line without an order, each person confirming the next before anyone approached the opening.
The broken ribs of the chamber separated around a lower corridor. Old metal nails lined its black walls, and empty hooks hung between them without moving.
Orrek studied the passage while keeping the chain below his shoulder. "The way ahead is open, although nothing down there sounds surprised to see us."
Kael stepped out of the organ ruin. The dead Extraction Body bled into the cracks behind him. Far down the lower corridor, one empty hook clicked against the black wall.
The chamber shook.
RUMBLE!
Kael flexed his marked hand. "It has finished guessing. We move before it uses what it learned."
