Iron scraped stone inside the service slot, killing the laugh.
Along separate rhythms came three wet ropes: one worried the chalk around Vera’s stopped boot, another rang against the shield on Dane’s left, and the third clicked its jaws above Tess’s cord.
Ear rings chimed in the slot. Someone there smelled of sour fur, old drain water, and hot tally wax.
"Asset found," the scout called behind itself, pleased by the category. "Awake. Damaged. Traveling under disputed string."
Ada fixed rod three against the containment ring. It held the geometry without carrying a living pulse.
"Skarn’s scout," she said. "It measures trouble. Then he charges for bringing enough back."
Brant’s shield pressed harder into Dane’s left side. His right palm and shoulder bore the load; his splinted left arm stayed clear.
"It found three ropes’ worth," Brant said. "Greedy little professional."
The chalk hook moved first. Vera struck with the wand in her left hand. Ward heat snapped across the metal too late. The hook cut her moving line, and the loss reached Dane through rod two in her burned right fist: one route gone, dungeon pressure rushing through the gap.
Tess caught the cord below Dane’s bare handles before it cinched around his lockplate and bitten hinge. Fibers split her right palm, and new pain cracked through the link.
"Ease half a hand," Vera said as the broken chalk dragged at her rod. "More gives him to the hook. Less gives Brackenvault a claim."
"You always find generous choices."
Tess fed out the measured slack. The cord stayed dangerous without becoming a noose.
The second hook struck the shield, skipped over its rim, and sent the cracked sword skittering from Dane’s right.
Brant kept his good hand on the shield. "Holt. Sword on his right. Use your prayer cord."
The priest’s knotwork slid over the floor. Metal scraped, then bumped against Holt’s boot.
"Got it."
"Keep it this time."
Holt secured the weapon at his belt, clear of Dane’s weight.
The third rope snapped tight. Its hook drove beneath Dane’s torn left hinge.
The jerk shifted a loose pin through the meat inside his corner. His lid slammed down on his wounded tongue. Mimic blood warmed his inner wall. Hunger offered a simple answer: reel the scout close and chew until its counting rings stopped.
Dane kept his teeth shut.
Brant drove the shield rim against the hook’s shaft. "Left corner into me. Let the floor take the pull."
Left meant the broken root beneath his hinge. It meant the soft corner abraded by every room that had mistaken stillness for obedience.
The scout hauled.
Dane pressed the ruined corner down.
Stone flayed the flesh under his wood. His base shifted less than a copper’s width, barely enough to spoil the hook’s angle.
Brant twisted the shield. The hook tore free with two splinters and no useful purchase.
The ear rings in the slot went still.
"Self-motion," the scout called.
Vera drove rod two lower against his hinge. "Same side, Dane. The shield side. Make it wrong again."
Rod one pulled through his tag. Rod two marked the damaged corner. Ada’s third rod fixed the four-body ring. Brant gave him a wall; Tess, a direction.
Dane leaned into the bad corner.
The ownership mark flared through wood and flesh, catching at every nail Brackenvault considered its own. The burn crossed into all four companions. Holt made a wet sound but kept sword and prayer cord clear.
"Dane," he said, voice thinned by borrowed pain. "Keep pressure on Brant if the choice is still yours."
Dane bore down against the shield.
Brant answered for him with a grunt. "Choice confirmed. Scout remains objectionable."
A hook came over the shield rim. The link gave Dane Brant’s surprise before the metal raked his right knuckles. Three cuts bit almost to bone. The man’s grip opened. The shield yawed away from Dane’s corner.
Brant caught it against his forearm and forced his palm back into the strap. His wet grip let the rim slide lower with every pull.
"I can brace or fence," he said. "Pick before it chooses for us."
"Brace," Vera said. "I have the iron."
Her wand cracked against the climbing hook. Brant stopped chasing it and spent his failing grip on the shield alone.
Dane pushed.
His underside clung where the dungeon wanted him. As wood fibers peeled backward, the two free coppers rolled left and dragged him off the useful edge.
He shoved them right with his wounded tongue.
One slid through his blood. The other struck the dirty coin trapped beyond reach, jarring hunger through his broken tooth. That fouled coin stayed lodged; the two loose coppers held his tilt.
Dane scraped forward a thumb’s width.

The scout’s three ropes changed direction at once.
One hook slammed into Brant’s shield. A second met Vera’s ward with a spit of heat. The third curled low around Dane’s raw left corner and bit deeper when the rope drew taut.
The cord jerked in Tess’s hands. Her old purchase mark stirred inside it. One breath of ownership might win the pull and give the dungeon a road through her.
"If I close the mark, I win the rope and lose him," she said.
Vera was busy grinding her wand against iron. "Then pay in skin."
Tess wound the cord across her left forearm. The existing cut opened beneath its bandage. Pain from that arm joined the bright split in her right palm, two different failures with one useful result: the scout’s rope stopped gaining ground.
Dane shifted toward Tess.
The motion cost his corner its grip and drove the hook farther through him, but it put slack into her cord before the old claim could close.
Tess felt the choice through the link. Her answer was to plant her boots and pull on Vera’s count.
Brant shoved with the shield. Vera redrew the chalk one hard stroke at a time with her left hand, never loosening the burned right around rod two. Dane chased the rolling coppers with his tongue and dragged his ruined base over stone.
The hook plowed through his corner until it struck an old nail.
The impact traveled through pin, hinge, and link. Holt gagged; Vera’s chalk stopped mid-stroke. Ada knocked rod three against the wall and restored the sagging ring.
"Left corner," Brant said, breath sawing. "Bite down and give me the foot you don’t have."
A mercenary was teaching a chest where to put an imaginary foot. Before the absurdity could become comforting, the hook ripped another strip loose.
Dane bit his tongue around the coppers and pressed down. His broken root caught stone while the tag pulled backward. Tess drew him forward without claiming him, and Brant held the shield steady for one ugly drag.
The hook tore out.
It took wood, flesh, and the bent nail. Once the fragment left Dane, quick ring-clicks, wet metal taps, and hot wax over the smell of his blood told him how the scout handled it.
"Crude drag confirmed," the scout reported into the slot. "Pain-linked escort. Sample holds old damage and fresh choice. Price rises."
Vera sealed the slot mouth with ward heat. The three ropes withdrew beyond it, their hooks ticking together around the stolen sample.
Ada cut through their breathing. "That cools into a warrant. Clear the choke."
Past the slot, roots pressed fibrous knots against Dane’s right rim. Brittle shells crowded his left, grating beneath Brant’s shield and releasing the sour reek of old albumen. The gap was narrower than the chest Brackenvault had built.
Vera found the line through rod two. "Damaged side into Brant’s shield. Fold only on the split."
The ownership tag punished the decision before Dane acted. A metal-dry voice touched the back of his mind.
Use the wrong shape, sentimental cupboard.
Dane pressed his warped left panel into the shield. Brant braced it as Tess drew the cord forward without tightening her claim.
The old split folded.
His hinge pin shifted. Wood separated from living tissue one resisting fiber at a time. A long strip peeled from his side and caught between shield and shell. Brant felt the loss through his palm; his breath broke, and the shield dipped.
"Hold the brace," Vera said.
He did.
Dane dragged into the space made by his missing piece. An eggshell ridge caught his right corner. His coppers rolled wrong, and his bloody tongue slipped beneath them. He hung between root wall and failing shield while the tag pulled backward.
Tess shortened the cord by a fist. Brant jammed his forearm behind the shield. Dane gathered both coppers against his right inner wall and scraped again.
The ridge cracked under his base, and he cleared the choke with less of himself than had entered it.
Behind them, the scout whistled.
The shoulderless service slot remained at Dane’s left. From the main drain beyond the third-gate lip came iron wheels, six sets of small boots, and chain teeth sliding through rings. Broader lungs breathed around a command whistle.
The scout’s ropes hurried toward those sounds.
A hooked pole struck the third frame. Its weight carried through Dane’s raw base. Six runners spread by sound, their chains scraping floor and shield rim.
Skarn stopped with the scout between them. Wax crackled over Dane’s stolen sample. A counting slate clicked once in the goblin’s hand.
"Good," he said. "The box can help drag itself home."
