June struck through Vera’s burned hand, and rod two stopped inside Dane’s torn left hinge.
"That is not my name."
Underneath, the borrowed shield ground under his left base while Brant’s cracked sword bowed under the right and Tess’s cord pulled a hot kink around the one point Vera had failed to carry forward.
The refusal struck all three anchors: a twist in the hinge, a bite around Dane’s brass tag, the containment ring crushing inward through rod three. It tried to hold June’s name and the living woman in the same space.
Brackenvault pulled before anyone could explain it.
The tendon-wrapped chain behind Dane’s socket contracted. His base dropped against the shield edge, and a bent pin drove through fresh wood. Relief followed the pain so quickly it sickened him. The dungeon could end the tearing. It could settle his bands, close the argument, and choose the next body his mouth opened for.
The collector cord snapped tight below his handles.
Slack checked from Tess’s side. Her breath caught through her teeth; no wet heat spread from the wrapped cut on her left forearm. Brant’s right shoulder hit Dane’s side and forced the cracked sword back under his slipping rim.
Behind them, the wax-capped runner’s spear ferrule scraped stone. Small shoes and two dragging broom heads crowded close enough for Dane to smell sweat beneath flour and fryer grease.
"Vera," Brant said. "Bring the rod. Tess waits for your count."
Rod two tore free of its fixed groove and traveled again.
"My name is Vera Pike."
Her voice moved with the hinge this time. Brant shoved. The shield carried Dane’s left base over the raised tile, the sword complained beneath his right, and Vera’s chalk dragged the cord route forward without letting Tess’s old claim close.
The memory fought to follow.
Cold rain pressed through the burn. A damp receipt clung beneath Dane’s old wrist. The cheap table trembled with a freezer motor, and June’s inked thumb rested against his knuckle with the easy ownership of years.
Dane drove his broken root into bare wood.
The receipt tore first. The freezer tremor broke against the sword’s scrape. June’s thumb pressure caught where Vera’s chalk-threaded fringe and token debris cut the root bed. He held until the coat sleeve and the household shape of her name lost Vera’s hand.
Pain crossed the ring. Vera’s next breath broke, but rod two stayed in the hinge.
Holt said, "The pressure left the burn. Keep that angle."
A wooden spear shaft crossed the traveling chalk with a rasp. Rod two jerked toward the sound.
"Twenty-five," Vera said. The rod scraped forward another handspan. "I sleep badly. I buy the ink that dries clean because I smear the cheap kind. Is that enough of me?"
Rod three knocked once against stone.
"Stop there," Ada said. "It held."
The link pressed past Vera’s last word and found nothing she had handed it. Rod two heated, then settled. The blocked pressure ran down Dane’s tag nails into the living chain.
"Keep talking," the wax-capped runner called. His voice came nearer while his spear kept worrying the chalk. "A speaking asset pays above witness scale."
The kitchen hand’s cleaver scraped once beside the boy’s quick steps. "You stand close enough to collect it, then."
The spear shaft stopped scraping.
Brant used the pause. "Drop ahead. Shield first."
His right shoulder lowered Dane onto the slope, where shield struck the descending floor and sword flexed beneath the opposite rim. Cord passed from Tess’s end only after Vera called. Holt’s linen stayed close to the wrapped arm and away from Dane’s handles.
Vera tried another fact between impacts. "Licensed field mage. City debt. And I am furious at this link, this dungeon, and you."
The last word reached Dane through rod two harder than the slope.
Small shoes missed the drop behind him.
Cloth snapped tight with a choking rasp. A cleaver slapped flat against stone. Two bodies hit, one adult-heavy and one light enough to bounce. The boy sucked air through a pinched collar.
"I’ve got you," the kitchen hand said. "Get the cloth off your throat and crawl."
The wax runner’s nailed heel struck the lower floor beyond them.
"Leave him. Ticket share closes at the third gate."
The boy’s frightened breath entered Dane’s hunger before the words finished.
Brackenvault loosened the bands around his lid. His root stopped grinding. The wounded tongue lifted, and his mouth opened toward the nearest living heat. No root pain opposed it. No hinge tear checked it.
The temporary lease answered only in his mouth. Dane forced his tongue beneath the lower teeth and shut the lid. The shield, sword, cord, rods, and straining adults dragged the rest of him another inch while his base remained dead weight.
Rod two struck his hinge twice.
"I felt that," Vera said. "I’m still helping. I haven’t decided what that makes us."
The June echo tried once more. Dane caught it at the broken root. He held his missing wife’s name away from the living woman’s voice until the chain pulled splinters from his socket and Pain Bleed shook four separate bodies around the ring.
The Registry reacted.

An iron bracket struck Dane’s right corner before anybody could read the result aloud. Brant changed the sword angle. Tess dropped two inches of cord. Vera waited until the split hinge cleared, then drove rod two forward. Wood peeled from the corner and stayed on the iron.
The hook spear found the collector cord behind them.
One silver strand sang against the barb. Tess released her controlled slack before the old purchase seal could cinch. Heat raced from Vera’s bead through the trapped strand. It parted with a snap that stung Dane’s lower rim.
The spear shaft whipped backward. A man cursed. A sweeper’s broom clattered, followed by two bodies colliding without the wet sound of a cut.
"That was collector silver," Tess said.
Vera gave the next pull count. Tess obeyed it.
At Dane’s root, the pressure changed. June’s name remained outside Vera’s boundary, still real and still his. Something smaller rose from the side that hurt when he chose.

His lid sagged toward rod two. The wounded tongue formed a useless first syllable. Dane crushed it flat and felt the root tear another thread from the empty socket.
Holt’s shoe scuffed close to the chalk and stopped.
"It is his."
"Unverified," Ada said. Rod three stayed hard against the ring. "Keep your hands back."
Vera pulled rod two clear of the next floor seam.
"Dane Rook."
The name reached him in her breath, scraped rough by work. No restaurant came with it. No rain, no inked thumb, no other woman’s voice. His name crossed the ring alone.
Dane kept his lid shut.
Brant’s right shoulder pressed again. "Left corner drops at the frame. Hinge clear?"
"Clear," Vera said.
"Pull."
They carried him onward.
Behind the scorched chalk, the wax runner shouted that a named asset qualified for thinking-hazard rates. A sweeper demanded the number before crossing another burn line. The kitchen hand stayed with the boy; their steps came slower between his breaths.
Water moved beside the path ahead, close enough that damp air cooled Dane’s bands. Three iron frames broke the corridor into shorter echoes. The backward pull on his tag weakened between one frame and the next, then bit again whenever the living chain found purchase.
The first frame was too low.
Iron stripped splinters from both upper corners. Brant dropped the sword to lower Dane’s right rim. Tess paid cord while Vera buried rod two beneath the torn hinge and held it clear. Hot wax gathered behind them.
The second frame held a side groove shaped for his brass tag.
Brackenvault wrenched him toward it. Rod one struck the groove and jammed. The borrowed shield skidded sideways beneath his left base; the sword lost the right rim; a base pin dragged across stone until mimic blood warmed the floor beneath him.
Pain Bleed opened in four places. Tess’s wrapped left forearm pulsed without fresh wetness. Brant’s right shoulder lost force. Vera’s burn split at one knuckle around rod two. Holt swallowed bile and counted the frame again because counting was the only useful thing his mouth could do.
"Second," he said. "Still in it."
Ada levered rod one out of the groove. "After the third, Brackenvault loses reach. Guild arrest gets easier."
No one argued over which was better. Brant found the shield edge and drove.
Stone ground open beneath the water channel ahead.
A service slot split the floor with a long wet scrape. Rope dragged inside it. Hooks clicked together, more than one set, and something with sour fur breathed close to hot black wax.
The kitchen hand stopped hard enough for the boy to strike her apron; both broom heads went quiet.
The wax runner’s spear butt hit stone. A knee followed.
"Recovery ticket accepted," he said.
Brackenvault answered through Dane’s tag, bands, base pins, and broken root.

Something inside the service slot laughed with a mouth full of hooks.
