The containment pressure reached Dane’s crooked tooth and changed course.
It came through Tess’s pulse against his tongue, Brant’s right-hand torque in the sword, Holt’s belt charm, and Vera’s rod at the lower left hinge. Those four routes converged on the cracked root while rod one dragged sideways at Dane’s brass tag and rod three drove up from the floor under Ada’s control.
Brackenvault lowered the upper teeth.
Tess’s sleeve caught on enamel. The shallow cut already open across the outside of her left forearm widened by a thread, and fresh blood warmed Dane’s tongue. Brant bore down on the pommel. The flat lifted one corner of the jaw, shaking under the strain in his right arm while his left splint knocked against his ribs.
"Follow the delay," Ada said. Breath roughened the edges of her precision. "The mouth’s classification is the trap."
The ring left the shared routes and pressed into the cracked root. It found the token shard Dane had buried there to keep the tooth above Tess’s skin.
Its first reading crossed Dane through rod one.
`Emergency Containment: Ada Sorn, Anchor.`
`Living Members: Four.`
`Nonliving Contact: One.`
`Asset Mark: Interfering.`
`Mind Trace: Sought Through Bite Delay.`
`Intake Clerk: Using Tongs.`
The ugly joke tightened the loop on Dane’s tag. For one closing fraction, the dungeon had to force its claim through the place where he was hurting himself to disobey.
Iron pins twisted in the strip crushed from his base. Bands pulled at his corners. Ceiling teeth ground toward the right-wall breach, forcing the shield line lower. Behind Dane’s socket, an old pulley knocked once, then again. A recovery chain took up slack link by link.
The third pull came with a deep contraction. It dragged the pins through living wood instead of merely against it. Sap and blood spread hot beneath Dane’s base. The floor transmitted a second pulse from the wall into the chain, slow and muscular.
Each pulse arrived a half beat before the links tightened. Something in the wall gathered itself, squeezed, and relaxed around old iron. The pulley answered with a dry click only after the contraction had already started. Brackenvault had taught living dungeon flesh to operate the recovery hardware.
One warder swore. "The chain has a muscle in it."
"Deny it a straight pull," Brant said. His sword lost another shaving of clearance while he spoke. "Turn the shields into the haul."
Iron scraped across the groove. Both shield loads changed angle against the right wall. The next contraction ran sideways through their rims, and a hook punched through the forward shield with a metal shriek. The grip jerked but held, buying Ada three breaths.
The jaw spent the first.
Across Dane’s tongue crept more blood, hot enough to wake the intake. Below reach, the dirty copper burned inside its trap. At the front lip, two free dull coppers clicked together. Vera’s chalk-threaded fringe remained pinned beneath token debris beside the root.
"Perfusion?" Ada asked.
The medic answered from behind the shields. "Holding. All five fingers respond. Same shallow cut. Pressure is climbing."
"Less than a thumb under the sword," Brant said.
"Vera, three counts through the hinge. Stop on my word even if we are close."
Rod two shifted against the split hinge before Vera answered. "Can the property mark drink this route too?"
"It burns you first. Three counts. There is no fourth."
Vera gave the hinge one pulse.
Rain struck asphalt. A cheap restaurant receipt lay beneath an ink-dark thumb. June leaned across the table while a dead battery turned one evening sour.
The fragment hit Dane through the root and struck Vera on its way back. Her breath caught. Both hands tightened through rod two, changing its angle against the hinge. Brant’s wedge lost a sliver of steel. Tess’s existing cut pressed harder into the same tooth.
Brackenvault pushed into that hesitation. The upper row descended while the memory still hung between them. Brant recovered the lost angle with his right shoulder; the sword edge carved a fresh groove in Dane’s rim. Tess kept her forearm still despite the pull along the cut. The ring had no quiet place to examine either of them.
Dane’s attention moved toward the familiar memory.
A hard boundary rose inside Vera’s pulse. The memory route ended there, closed around the life on the other side. Dane stopped. The ring shuddered once at the boundary and dropped toward the hinge instead.
"Count two," Ada said. "Smaller."
Vera obeyed.
Her second pulse carried less of her and more deliberate mana. The containment pressure slid along rod two, under the brass claim, and hooked beneath Dane’s cracked root.
The living chain contracted. Dane moved a fingernail inside the socket. His pins cut parallel tracks through his base, and the crooked tooth dragged Tess’s sleeve with him. Brant followed the motion through his right shoulder, keeping the sword flat. The shield line gave ground at the breach; the hook in the forward shield tore metal but reached no flesh.
"Count three."
Vera drove the final pulse through the hinge.
The token shard sank. The crooked tooth buried deeper in its split root. Dane’s blood joined Tess’s on his tongue, and his intake convulsed around both without completing the feed. Rod one scorched the tag. Rod two ground the hinge pin. Rod three hammered the floor beneath the ring.
"Stop."
Vera cut the route. The hinge received no fourth count.
The trace found no voice and no readable name. It found the thinking refusal wrapped around one tooth: a mind spending its only contested piece of anatomy to delay another adult’s death.
The jaw dropped another fraction. Brant’s sword bowed until its edge cut Dane’s lower rim.
Frontline failed against the evidence. Pack failed. Equipment failed.
`Temporary Listing: Bound Mimic Asset.`
The property tag pulled hard enough to tear raw tissue around one nail.
`Consent Channel: Refusal Under Pain.`
Tess’s blood reached the back of Dane’s tongue. Hunger answered with a full-body clamp.
`Chest Objected To Being Furniture.`
The third line locked a temporary brace between the tag and hinge. Brackenvault kept the lid, the feed command, and almost every moving part. The brace forced the room to contest Dane’s refusal before the spell could call him equipment again.
"Bound asset?" Brant said. The word scraped out with the sword vibration. "That’s your improvement?"
"Member would claim consent," Ada said. "Monster gives the dungeon its own word. Equipment just failed. The bridge only has to survive the bite."
Vera held the lower hinge route. "Then leave it behind when we cross."
The upper teeth sank closer.
Tess’s fear entered Dane through the arm in his mouth. Her pulse stumbled, recovered, and struck harder. "All five fingers still move. Don’t pull me yet."
Brant changed the pommel angle by a pressure Dane could feel through his rim. "Holding."
Holt’s prayer mark touched the outer edge of the ring without answering the left-wall lure. "Can pain stay evidence without becoming one more command?"
"Separate it," Ada said. "Do not absolve, bless, or claim anything."
Holt sent a narrow prayer into the four-member circuit.
Under Holt’s prayer, shared pressure sorted by source. Root fracture stayed inside Dane’s tooth bed; the shallow forearm cut remained Tess’s. Brant’s right shoulder carried the sword while the ache around his splinted left forearm stayed apart. Vera’s hinge burn withdrew from the involuntary memory path. Hunger remained in Dane’s body; the order to finish Tess came through Brackenvault’s tag.
The separation changed what each of them could resist. Brant stopped compensating for pain that belonged to the root and recovered a hair of sword angle. Vera’s rod quit shivering with Tess’s pulse. Dane still wanted the blood on his tongue, but the command driving his teeth lost hunger as its disguise.
Heat fired through the brass mark. Every band cinched. The recovery chain snapped taut behind the socket and tore another strip from Dane’s base. Ceiling teeth descended against the right breach, grinding the shield rims toward the medic’s protected space.
The medic’s kit buckles skittered over stone. Tourniquet clasp and fitted splint moved with him behind the iron cover, never approaching Tess’s trapped arm.
Milo’s return charm pulsed once beyond the left wall. The answer weakened before Holt could repeat it aloud. Stone groaned around the air gap Tess had opened.
Ownership Defense entered through the tag as pressure first and language second.
`Storage Mimic Seventeen: Dungeon Property.`
`Party Structure: External Claim.`
`Bite Completion: Authorized.`
`Witnesses: Irrelevant.`
`Recovery Penalty: Preparing.`
`Property Has No Vote.`
The upper teeth drove down.
Brant lost a quarter inch. The token shard ripped farther through Dane’s root, and the split hinge struck rod two with enough force to jar Vera’s grip. At the breach, the recovery hook tore from the forward shield’s rim to its center. Chain whipped through the opening.
A scream followed, then two wet impacts against stone. The floor kicked as a boot pinned the chain before the living pull could take it back.
"Two fingers skinned to bone," the medic called. Cloth tore. Packing compressed with a slick sound. "I have him one-handed. Crowe’s kit stays ready."
"Wrong," Vera said.
She drove rod two against the hinge. The one-word objection entered Dane’s brass tag beside the ownership claim and refused to leave. Backlash crossed the rod into her hands; her breath broke, and the scent of scorched skin reached Dane’s open mouth. She kept the tip seated.
Behind the crooked tooth, the trace tightened around something that had survived every command to become a function. It carried no syllable, biography, or name. The ring received only the stubborn continuity of someone still there.
"There you are," Ada said.
Brackenvault lowered the teeth again.
"If you understand me," Tess said, voice thinned by pressure, "keep holding."
Dane reached for the lid. Nothing answered. He tried the hinge and met the dungeon’s full weight. The crooked tooth remained his only purchase, its root already splitting around the token shard.
He held with that.
Through the ring tore the cost. Over the prayer mark, Holt folded. Root pain dragged a curse from Brant’s right-hand grip. Vera’s sharp gasp traveled through rod two as it rattled against the hinge. From Tess came one small sound when the fracture struck through the pulse in her trapped arm.
The shields dropped half a step under the strain transmitted through Dane’s base. The injured warder kept his boot on the chain while the medic held packing to the two ruined fingers.
Ada drove rod three deeper. "Mind trace confirmed. Consent unknown. I need a pause between the room’s command and his motion."
Vera’s rod shook in the hinge. "He’s already using one."
The sword slipped. Its edge peeled another strip from Dane’s wounded tongue, and the same shallow line on Tess’s forearm opened a fraction farther. Brant forced the pommel down before a second tooth could reach her.
"The spell needs a choice it can record," Ada said.
Holt held the pain routes apart. "The jailer wrote both answers."
The recovery chain contracted. Dane’s pins tore through the underside strip; the shields lost another inch; Milo’s left-wall signal weakened again.
"I know," Ada said.
"Teeth," Brant warned.
Rod one strained on the tag. Vera kept rod two at the lower left hinge. Ada drove rod three until the floor cracked around its foot. The three routes curled the Mind Trace into a pause no wider than the delay Dane had already bought.
Brackenvault slammed the lid down by a hair.
Tess’s forearm pressed along the same shallow cut. Fresh blood ran over Dane’s tongue without making a second wound or completing the feed. The sword wedge shrieked. His base pins tore another strip from living wood, and both right-wall shields reached their last safe inch.
The ring wrote the only decision it could hold open.
/==[ Party Link: Emergency Containment ]==\
| Subject: Mind Found In Mimic Frame\
| Status: Bound / Contested / Awake\
| Available Choice: Complete Bite Or Hold Open\
| Hold Cost: Root Fracture, Hunger Backwash, Shared Pain\
| Bite Cost: Tess Crowe\
==[ Consent Window: Closing With The Teeth ]==/
The dungeon forced down. The ring held one narrow pause. Tess’s bleeding arm stayed between both outcomes while the choice reached Dane as pressure.
