Tess’s pulse struck Dane’s wounded tongue as the first tooth row folded around her left forearm.
Her skin held. Cloth dragged over enamel without tearing, and every tendon against his mouth floor went rigid. She let out half a breath through her teeth. Brackenvault kept lowering his lid in small, patient fractions.
The sword Dane had torn from Brant’s right hand slipped off his tongue. It rang against stone on the right side of the groove.
A boot stamped down before the moving floor could steal it. Steel scraped toward Dane, stopped, then came back with Brant’s weight behind the pommel. His splint knocked once against his ribs during the recovery. Right-hand pressure returned through the pommel, twisting the blade until its flat drove between Dane’s lower rim and the tooth descending above Tess’s sleeve.
The wedge caught one corner. The rest of the jaw kept coming.
"Don’t move that arm," Brant said. His voice shook with the blade.
Tess swallowed. "I was saving it for retirement."
Her pulse tripped over the last word. She forced it steady against Dane’s tongue.
The brass tag on Dane’s lockplate jerked sideways.
Until then, every charge through it had driven down: close, pierce, feed. A second claim caught the tag and pulled toward the right wall. Stone split there with a crack that shivered through Dane’s floor pins. The left false wall held Milo’s weakening return pattern; this break came from the other side, where Pima’s filed counterfoil had been waiting.
The warrant entered Dane through the property mark in hard, stamped clauses.
`Rookfall Guild Override: Emergency Intervention.`
`Protest: Hostile Route Interference.`
`Trigger: Exit Terms Filed Before Entry.`
`Warrant Holder: Professor Ada Sorn.`
`Scope: Stabilize Licensed Rescue.`
`Complaint: Entering The Room.`
The right wall tried to grind the breach shut. Two tower shields hit the rotating groove edge-first, one impact close behind the other. Iron screamed. The load traveled through the floor into Dane’s crushed base as two people braced against the room.
Three spell rods chimed beyond the shields. A medical case landed behind them; buckles snapped open, leather fed through a tourniquet clasp, and narrow splint slats clicked together.
"Medic stays behind the shield line," a woman said. Her voice was low, quick, and irritated by imprecision. "No one pulls Crowe until I have separated a pain response from the feeding command. Warders, if that groove straightens either shield, call it before it breaks you."
Professor Ada Sorn had arrived.
One rod left the other two with a sharp metallic note. It struck Dane’s brass tag and wound legal pressure around it. The downward feed charge twisted sideways, forcing Brackenvault to drag Pima’s warrant through every closing fraction.
Dane’s crooked left tooth still held its corner. Brant’s sword held another. Everywhere else, enamel sank.
"Will that stop his mouth?" Vera asked. Chalk rasped against Dane’s lockplate while she spoke.
"No. It makes the force traceable."
"He delayed the tooth before you breached."
Ada’s first rod tightened around the property mark, following the strain into Dane’s cracked root. "Left front tooth is answering late. Local disagreement under Core charge. I can test that. I cannot call it a mind."
The distinction hurt less than being called furniture. Dane had no room to enjoy it.
Brackenvault crushed the floor pins deeper into the strip torn from his base. The right breach groaned behind both shields. Inside his mouth, the broken clean token shifted beneath the crooked tooth and drove a sharper edge into the root.
His tongue bucked under Tess’s arm.
Against his mouth floor, her pulse marked the sequence hunger wanted: split skin, draw blood, close past the sword, swallow what followed. Dane ground the crooked tooth into the token shard until the root began to tear around it.
Through the first rod came Ada’s second claim, every clause altering what the room could do.
The first rod caught his full property line, F-2 Storage Mimic Seventeen, between two classifications. Brackenvault named him an active feeding hazard. The guild answered with responsive storage asset. The warrant seized on the bite delay under Core charge and made destruction contestable.
`Argued Before Blood.`
The right wall slammed inward. The shields caught it. Their rims gouged the groove, throwing a vibration through Dane’s socket hard enough to chatter his two free coppers against the front lip. The room could no longer collapse on everyone without breaking the filed warrant first.
So it drove the jaw at the person already between Dane’s teeth.
Pressure doubled. Brant grunted as the sword bowed. The upper tooth nearest Tess’s elbow dragged along her sleeve, caught cloth, and opened skin on the outside of her left forearm.
Warmth spread into the fabric pressed against Dane’s tongue. Salt and iron followed. The tendons in Tess’s trapped forearm drew tight as her hand closed, then loosened again.
The medical clasp stopped rattling.
"Left hand, Crowe," the medic called. "Move the fingers one at a time."
The tendons shifted against Dane’s mouth floor in five small answers.
"All five moving. Perfusion is holding. The cut is shallow; the pressure isn’t. Tourniquet and fitted splint ready. I am not touching her."
Tess drew a careful breath. Her pulse no longer bothered pretending.
Blood reached Dane’s tongue and his intake wrenched toward it. The dirty copper strained inside its inaccessible trap. A loose token splinter dug deeper under the cracked root while the left hinge scraped its pin and the tag burned the feed order through raw tissue. The pains overlapped, their order lost.
Hunger knew. Hunger loved the answer on his tongue.
Dane pressed harder on the broken token. The crooked tooth stayed above Tess’s skin, quivering against the weight of the rest of his mouth.
The second and third rods knocked together once.
"Pike," Ada said. "Take one. Lower inner hinge. Get your chalk off the ownership mark before it drinks the next ward."
Vera caught the offered rod; its tip rang against Dane’s split left hinge. Her chalk route peeled away from the brass tag and crossed the mouth-side grain. When the rod seated under the lower hinge pin, a new boundary bit into the pressure.
Rod one dragged at the tag. Rod two held the hinge. The third remained with Ada, tapping once against metal when the right wall hit the shields again.
The dungeon still owned the jaw. Now its force had to cross two witnesses.
"It stopped drinking through the tag," Vera said. The hinge continued to crush inward beneath her rod. "The lid still belongs to the room."
"Keep the route there. Tell me if it starts taking memory instead of mana."
At the breach, one shield edge skipped half a handspan. A warder cursed and caught it before the groove could turn the iron broadside.
"Brace is narrowing," he called.
The other warder answered through clenched breath. "Still ours."
Milo’s return charm pulsed behind the left wall, weaker than before.
Holt kept his prayer mark tied at his belt. "Milo is alive. The answer is fading."
No prayer crossed the room for Brackenvault to seize. Only the report did.
Brant’s sword scraped deeper into Dane’s lower rim. The tremor in the blade had spread from his right hand through his shoulder. Only the splint’s knock against his ribs came from the left side; no second grip reached the weapon.
"Wedge is almost gone," he said.
The third rod struck the floor upright.
Its impact ran through the socket. A containment pressure widened from it, caught against the warders without disturbing their brace, then reached for the people already tied to Dane by pain and tools.
"Emergency structure," Ada said. She was breathing harder now. "It binds the living rescuers, shares injury feedback, and makes the room fight one restraint instead of four prey responses."
Vera kept rod two seated in Dane’s hinge. "Are you putting him in it?"
The jaw dropped another fraction before Ada could answer. Brant’s sword slipped along the lower rim and sliced the wound already open across Dane’s tongue. Tess’s arm pressed harder into his mouth. The same shallow cut widened by less than a fingernail; no second tooth reached skin.
"I am asking whether the structure can find anyone in there," Ada said.
"Ask," Vera said. "Don’t appoint."
Rod two stayed fixed. The next closing surge drove it against Vera’s hands and sent her boots scraping, and she kept the hinge.
The containment spell reached Tess first.
Dane knew it when her pulse changed against his tongue. A second beat joined it, steady and foreign, carrying the medic’s distant readiness and Ada’s command to wait. Tess’s trapped muscles tightened, yet her forearm remained still between the teeth.
The spell traveled through the sword next. Brant’s right-hand torque doubled back through the steel as another pressure found him and measured the strain he was spending to hold the wedge. His left splint knocked softly against his ribs. The blade held its angle.
Holt’s belt charm answered when the spell reached him. Its familiar license cadence passed through the left-wall route, touched Milo’s weaker reply, and stopped without pulling Holt a single step.
Then rod two changed pitch inside Dane’s split hinge.
Vera’s chalk boundary tightened around the pin. The containment pressure crossed her through the route she had chosen, leaving the brass ownership tag to strain alone under rod one.
The two shield braces lost another inch at the right breach. The medic dragged his open kit with them. Stone teeth ground against iron; one rim bent; neither warder let the wall shear closed.
Rod one held the tag. Rod two held the hinge. Rod three drove the connected pressure past Vera and toward Dane’s mouth.
It turned toward the crooked tooth, the only part of him that had refused to finish the bite.
Ada drove the third rod deeper into the floor. "If there is a mind in that chest, the bond has to find it before the teeth finish closing."
