Alex kept Adaptation fully active.
The cold, the emptiness, and the silence of the Shadow Element still occupied both his body and the dark outline at his feet.
The dual presence no longer felt disorienting the way it had in the first seconds after the connection formed.
It simply existed now, a second set of limbs waiting for orders, patient and dense and ready.
Adaptation recorded every small shift in that dual awareness without pause, filing the weight of the shadow, the exact way the cold sat against the soles of his feet, and the quiet pressure of the silence pressing outward from the dark shape on the ground.
He decided to test finer control first.
'Alright. Circles. Let's see if I can make this thing walk around me without falling apart.'
He focused on the edges of the shadow and slowly guided them outward.
The dark shape on the forest floor shifted.
It dragged itself in a rough arc around his left foot, edges blurring and thinning for a second before snapping back into a denser black.
The motion was clumsy.
The front of the shadow stretched too far while the back lagged, creating a warped, uneven oval that looked more like a drunk animal circling its own owner than anything precise.
Adaptation caught the exact moment the lag appeared, the slight delay between his intention and the response, and the way the element inside the shadow tried to thin when forced to turn too sharply.
Alex narrowed his eyes and adjusted.
He pulled the lagging section forward, then eased the stretched front back into place.
The shadow lurched, almost tipping over its own outline, then settled and continued the path.
One full rough circle completed around his feet.
The connection held the entire time. No sudden break or complete dispersal, just ugly, stubborn progress.
He let out a quiet breath he had not realized he was holding.
A small, genuine smile pulled at the corner of his mouth.
'It actually went around, its ugly as hell, but it went around, I guess that counts.'
He sent the shadow through a second circle, slightly smoother this time.
The lag still existed.
The edges still wanted to fray when he pushed the speed even a little.
But the connection held and the shadow obeyed.
Adaptation kept recording, noting every correction, every small improvement in the timing between command and movement.
The data felt cleaner than the first jump, more usable.
Zara watched from a few steps away, arms loosely folded under the oversized fur coat.
Her own shadow sat quiet and dense at her feet, no longer performing any tricks.
Through the open bond he felt the steady thread of her attention, the quiet assessment she always carried when he tried something new.
There was no disappointment in it.
Only the familiar focus of someone who had already decided he would get there eventually and was simply measuring how far the first steps had carried him.
"Your control is still crude," she said, voice calm and instructional.
"The edges fray the moment you ask for anything more complicated than a straight push or a single jump,"
"The lag between intention and movement is still obvious if you look for it,"
"But that is expected,"
"You just formed the external connection for the first time only minutes ago,"
"If you keep cycling the element the way I showed you, keep forcing Adaptation to record every small correction and every failed attempt, you will eventually reach the point where your shadow moves as smoothly and completely as mine does,"
"It will stop feeling like a stubborn tool you have to argue with and start feeling like another limb,"
"That is when the real applications become possible."
Alex nodded, still watching the dark shape complete its second uneven lap.
The smile had not left his face.
"Yes Zara, I can feel the lag every time I try to change direction, it is like the command has to travel through thick mud before it arrives, the edges want to thin out the second I ask for a sharp turn, but it is listening,"
"That is already more than I expected on the first day of actually using the external connection, I thought it would take me half the afternoon just to make the shadow move without collapsing."
He let the shadow settle back into its normal position under his feet, then turned his full attention toward Zara.
The forest around them stayed quiet.
Thick shade pressed in from every side.
Somewhere far above the canopy a thin band of sunlight tried and failed to reach the ground.
None of it mattered.
All of his focus sat on the woman a few steps away and the dark outline that answered to her will with such casual precision.
"Alright," he said.
"Time to test something else..."
He slowly guided his shadow forward across the leaf littered ground.
The dark outline stretched and slid toward hers, keeping a low profile, edges carefully held together so it would not fray halfway.
Zara did not move, her physical body stayed completely still.
Her own shadow remained ordinary and quiet at first, matching her stance exactly, dense but passive.
Alex watched the distance close.
Adaptation recorded the way the two shadows approached each other, the faint pressure that built when their edges drew near, the quiet readiness that sat inside his own connection.
He waited until the two shadows were close enough that their edges almost touched.
'What if...'
Then he flicked.
The front of his shadow snapped upward in a sharp, sneaky arc aimed straight at the "head" of Zara's outline, kind of a playful jab, it was fast, direct and a little smug.
It never landed.
Zara's shadow moved on its own.
The dark shape under her feet twisted with sudden precision, one arm like extension rising and sweeping sideways in a clean, heavy swat.
The impact was solid.
Alex felt it through the connection the same way he would have felt a real hand striking his own shoulder.
The feedback arrived without warning, sharp and physical, carrying the full weight of the strike straight into his awareness.
His shadow was knocked cleanly aside, edges scattering for a second before reforming in a messy heap a short distance away.
At the same moment the physical sensation of the swat traveled up the link and into his body.
His shoulder jerked hard and balance shifted.
He actually staggered one full step to the side, boots sliding half a pace through the soft leaves before he caught himself.
"Ah— shit—"
He caught his footing, scowling down at the offending shadow that had just treated his own like a misbehaving pet.
The feedback still lingered in his nerves, a clear phantom pressure across his shoulder and upper arm.
Adaptation had recorded every detail of the impact, the force, the angle, the way Zara's shadow had moved without any visible command from her physical body.
"Your shadow is a damn bully," he muttered under his breath, rubbing the phantom ache even though there was nothing physical to rub.
"You know that was a perfectly reasonable test flick and it answered with a full power slap! No warning or mercy, just pure rude!"
Zara's shadow did not stay still after the swat.
It reformed into a proper outline of her body with almost lazy speed, then deliberately leaned forward.
The head shape tilted at a playful angle.
A long, unmistakable tongue of pure darkness stuck out toward him in a clear, childish gesture of mockery.
The same expression her shadow had made in the palace hallway earlier that morning, only this time there was no attempt to hide it and no thin block across the bond to soften the amusement behind it.
Alex stared at the tongue.
'Seriously? Again?'
Zara herself started to giggle.
The sound was soft at first, barely more than a quiet breath of laughter, then grew warmer and more genuine.
Through the open bond the amusement rolled across clearly, bright and unfiltered, carrying the same playful energy her shadow was displaying.
She raised one hand to cover her mouth, eyes curved with open delight, and began to say—
