’Let’s go for it then!’
Alex pushed the Shadow Element the final distance.
The filament crossed the last boundary between the soles of his feet and the shadow cast on the forest floor.
The connection began to form at once.
It was not instantaneous the way Zara’s had looked from the outside, but it grew steadily stronger as more of the element flowed downward and settled into the dark shape on the ground.
’What is this strange feeling...’
The sensation that came with it was strange and immediate.
’...like I have a new body part?’
It felt like gaining an entirely new body, an extension of himself that had never existed before.
His shadow was no longer just an outline created by the dim light under the canopy.
It was part of him now, responsive, present, waiting for direction the same way a hand or a foot waited for direction.
Zara felt the same shift through the open bond.
’He’s actually doing it, and the right way at that, on the first try...’
The dual awareness reached her clearly, the exact moment the link solidified on his side.
Her eyes dropped to the ground at his feet.
The ordinary shadow that had been lying there a moment earlier had deepened without expanding its outline.
The black of it grew denser, richer, more absolute, as if the shape itself had gained weight and intention.
She did not speak, she simply watched the change finish settling and let the bond carry the quiet confirmation back to him so he would know the external side matched what he was feeling internally.
Alex held the connection carefully, letting Adaptation record every detail of the new link.
The cold, the emptiness, and the silence were still present, but they now existed in two places at once: inside his body and inside the shadow on the ground.
’This is way too disorienting!’
The dual awareness was disorienting for a second or two.
Then it stabilized into something usable.
’Sigh...’
He could feel the edges of the shadow the same way he could feel the edges of his own hands.
The sensation was not perfect yet.
There was still a slight lag, a thin barrier of unfamiliarity between intention and response, but the connection itself was real and holding steady.
After a short time the connection fully settled.
’I can feel the stable control over the shadow for the first time.’
The link no longer felt fragile or half-formed.
It was there, solid, ready to be used.
He remembered the way Zara had made her own shadow bend at the waist, squat low against the ground, and form a clear V-sign with two fingers while her physical body stayed completely still.
The memory was clear enough to attempt a simpler version of the same idea.
’Let’s try it...’
He commanded the shadow to jump.
The dark shape on the ground responded.
The motion was rough, a little uneven at the edges, nothing like the smooth and precise control Zara had shown only a short while earlier, but it was unmistakable.
The shadow lifted, compressed, and performed a clear jumping motion before settling back onto original position.
The feedback through the connection was sharp and physical, as if his own body had moved even though he had remained completely still.
The sensation of impact when the shadow landed traveled back up the link and registered in his awareness like a muted version of real contact with the ground.
Alex stared at the shadow.
’It worked?...It actually worked on the first real try!’
The exhilaration hit hard and fast.
The slow pace, failed attempt, dispersed element, and careful corrections from Zara had just produced something that moved when he told it to move.
The success was small compared to everything she could already do with her own shadow, but it was his.
He had formed the connection, issued a command, and the shadow had obeyed.
The lag between intention and movement was still obvious.
The edges had blurred slightly during the jump.
None of that mattered in the moment.
The control was real, and the shadow was listening.
Zara felt the spike of excitement and pride cross the bond without any filter.
A small smile appeared on her face, the real one she usually kept under tighter control when she was in teaching mode.
"You actually did it on the first real try," she said.
Her voice carried the quiet satisfaction of a teacher watching a student clear a necessary hurdle without collapsing the attempt halfway through.
"The little prodigy title at least does not go to waste this time."
She did not look away.
Her eyes stayed on him and on the shadow at his feet, tracking the residual movement and the quality of the connection he was still holding.
Through the bond she could feel him testing the edges of the new control almost immediately, small adjustments, tiny experimental commands, the early exploration that always followed the first success with a new limb or a new technique.
"Heh, did I not tell you whose child I am ?"
But Alex kept his attention on the shadow.
The jump had been rough, but it had been real.
He could already feel the places where the control was still crude, the slight lag between intention and movement, the way the edges of the shadow wanted to blur or thin if he pushed the command too hard or too fast.
Adaptation was recording all of it in the background, building a clearer map of how the external connection behaved under direct orders.
The data would matter the next time he tried something more complicated than a single jump.
He did not rush the next test.
He simply held the connection and let the new extension settle more completely into his awareness, feeling the cold and the emptiness and the silence occupy both body and shadow at the same time.
The dual presence was still strange, but it was no longer disorienting.
It was becoming usable.
And Zara continued to watch in silence, the small smile still present at the corner of her mouth, ready to correct him the moment the control started to slip or the connection began to fray under too much pressure.
