Alex felt the sensation land fully across the bond.
It was not the Shadow Bond between them.
That channel was already open and familiar, carrying the steady background awareness of Zara’s presence the way it had for years.
This was something else.
A second connection forming on her side, separate from the link they shared.
She had established true control over her own cast shadow, and through that control she could reach the other shadows that touched or bordered it on the forest floor.
The feeling registered in his mind like the sudden awareness of a new limb.
It was not foreign or invasive, it was simply present where nothing had been present a moment before.
The shadow on the ground was no longer a passive outline created by the dim light through the canopy.
It was an extension of her will, as responsive as a hand or a foot.
He watched it move.
Zara herself remained completely still.
Her physical body did not shift by a single degree.
Her feet stayed planted in the soft leaf litter.
Her shoulders did not adjust.
Her expression stayed calm.
Only the shadow changed.
It bent at the waist as if the dark shape had developed a spine of its own.
It squatted low against the ground, compressing its outline.
Then it lifted one dark hand, formed two fingers into a clear V-sign, and aimed the gesture directly at him.
The movement was deliberate, playful, and completely impossible for an ordinary shadow to perform.
Alex felt a sharp pulse of excitement cut through the careful analytical focus he had been maintaining.
’Wow! Now that’s something I want to try for myself!’
The reaction was immediate and unfiltered.
Watching a shadow act independently of its owner was one thing in theory.
Seeing it happen two steps in front of him, while the bond fed him the exact sensation of the control required, was something else entirely.
Zara’s mouth curved into a small smile.
The bond carried the quiet satisfaction she was not bothering to hide this time, the same mild amusement that had sat under the crude block in the hallway.
The sight of the independent shadow dragged another memory forward before he could stop it.
The long palace corridor.
Morning light on polished floorboards.
Her shadow sticking its tongue out toward his while her real face stayed perfectly neutral.
The thin, incomplete block she had tried to throw over the bond to hide the feeling.
He started to form the thought properly, the half-accusation and the demand for an explanation already taking shape in his mind.
’YOU—’
Before he could finish it, Zara moved.
She pulled her shadow back to the exact underside of her feet in one clean, decisive motion.
The playful shape collapsed without resistance.
The V-sign vanished.
The dark outline returned to a perfect match of her physical stance, denser and more present than an ordinary shadow but no longer performing tricks.
Alex’s half-formed complaint halted in the middle of the sentence.
The bond carried a new preparation from her side, a gathering of intention that felt heavier and more focused than the simple external control she had just demonstrated.
He yelled through the link at once.
’ZARA! what are you doing now!? You shifted too fast! I was still looking at the last thing...’
Her reply came calm and focused, the instructional edge fully present again.
’Focus well, Alex,’
’This next part will feel incredible to you even though you are only receiving the effect through the bond and not the real change inside your own body,’
’Do not look away,’
’Do not let Adaptation drop for even a moment,’
’Record everything.’
Alex locked his attention in place and pushed Adaptation to full sensitivity.
Zara moved her shadow.
It rose.
The dark shape on the ground lifted as if gravity had been politely asked to step aside and had agreed without argument.
Alex felt her control over the element sharpen through the bond, clearer and more intense than the earlier demonstration of simple external movement or the playful gestures.
The shadow began to climb her body from the bottom up in a continuous, deliberate sheet.
It started at the soles of her feet, covering the underside first and then the tops in a smooth layer of deeper black that erased the ordinary contact with the ground.
It rose over the ankles without leaving gaps and wrapped the lower legs with exact precision.
At the knees it paused only long enough to settle fully against the joint before continuing upward.
Thighs.
The dense material of the shadow followed the lines of muscle and bone without loose folds or tight constriction, simply present and complete.
It crossed the pelvis in one unbroken motion and continued onto the stomach, spreading in an even layer that erased the ordinary fabric of her clothes from sight and replaced it with living darkness that moved as she breathed.
The shadow climbed higher without slowing.
Chest.
The curve of her breasts.
The shadow covered them with the same exact, unhesitating precision it had shown on every other surface.
Neck.
In a final smooth motion it closed over the last exposed skin of her throat and jaw and completed the coverage.
Zara stood fully enclosed in her own shadow, a silhouette of absolute black against the dim forest light, every previous outline of clothing and skin replaced by the denser, occupied shadow.
Then the shadow stopped being external.
Alex felt it enter.
The shadow that had wrapped her from the outside sank inward, becoming one with the body it had covered.
It was not resting on the surface like a second skin, but merging, like crossing from outside to inside in a continuous flow that the bond transmitted with perfect clarity, through the open channel he felt the temperature of her body drop in a clean, controlled wave that started at the feet and rose at the same pace the shadow had climbed.
A strange thrill ran through her at the same moment, sharp and electric, the sensation of the element locking into a new configuration that her system recognized and welcomed without resistance.
The cold and the thrill crossed the bond together and hit him with full force, strong enough that his own skin prickled in sympathy.
Then the feeling of power arrived.
Enormous.
’This feeling...’
It surged across the bond in a rising tide that had nothing to do with ordinary mana circulation and everything to do with the completed union of body and shadow.
The scale of it made the earlier activation of shadow vision feel small and almost trivial by comparison.
’...is going to make me addicted to it!’
Adaptation scrambled to record the flood of new data while Alex’s conscious mind tried to process the sheer weight of what she had just done to herself in front of him.
The power kept rising—
