Alex met her eyes across the dim clearing.
"Ya, I will focus on whatever you are about to do, Zara, now show me."
Zara nodded once.
The instructional tone settled over her voice the same way it had in the sealed room when she first demonstrated the path to the eyes.
"Focus on the Shadow Bond completely,"
"The same way you did when I taught you to settle the element behind the eyes,"
"Go deep into the link and stay there for the entire process,"
"I will send you the full sensation again, every stage of it from the first gathering to the final connection,"
"You only need to keep Adaptation locked on everything that crosses the bond,"
"Do not split your attention between the feeling and anything else in the clearing,"
"Record all of it,"
"I think from what the aspect’s description says, the more complete the data Adaptation gathers, the faster you will be able to replicate the movement yourself when your turn comes."
"Yes, I am already focusing on the bond," Alex said.
’Well then, let’s push my concentration into the open channel.’
The link widened under the pressure, clean and immediate, the same way it had widened during the first successful transmission of the core sensation earlier that morning.
Through it he felt Zara register the shift on her side, the quiet acknowledgment that he was present, fully attentive, and already feeding every incoming detail into Adaptation without lag.
She began.
Zara gathered the Shadow Element from her core the same way she had gathered it for the vision demonstration.
Alex felt the familiar qualities rise at once through the bond.
Cold that sat deeper than ordinary temperature and deeper than the chill of the forest air around them.
Emptiness that occupied space without filling it, the same precise absence he had learned to recognize as the element’s true signature after the first transmission.
Silence that needed no volume to be absolute.
’Yup, It’s the same as last time.’
Adaptation locked onto the transmission the moment it arrived, recording every detail of the initial gathering while the rest of his attention stayed inside the bond and refused to wander toward the trees or the soft ground under his feet.
Zara felt his focus stabilize.
The quality of his attention through the link was steady enough for her to proceed without any pause or additional instruction.
She directed the element.
This time the path did not rise toward the eyes.
It turned downward.
’Down we go, I guess.’
Alex tracked the movement with the same precision he had used on the upward route only a short while earlier.
The cold filament left the dense knot at her navel and began the descent.
It slid through the lower abdomen first, crossing the soft internal space with the same coherent, unhurried intent it had shown when climbing.
No turbulence or leakage into surrounding tissue.
The emptiness remained exact.
The silence stayed complete.
Adaptation recorded the change in direction as cleanly as it had recorded the earlier climb, filing the downward turn as a deliberate choice rather than a loss of control.
From the abdomen the filament entered the pelvic region.
The anatomy here was denser, the available channels more constrained by bone and the heavy supporting muscle that framed the area.
The element did not fight the tighter space.
It simply narrowed, staying concentrated, a single continuous thread of cold absence moving with deliberate patience through territory that had never been part of the vision path he had already learned.
Alex felt the temperature drop along the internal lines of her pelvis through the bond, the same patient chill he now recognized instantly as the element’s presence, only now traveling in the opposite direction from every previous demonstration.
’...I am Focusing on The Shadow Element...I am only—’ Alex repeated the chant to himself like a lifeline.
It continued into her thighs.
’...’
’Fuck...’
The cold split cleanly into two parallel strands, one for each leg, without any loss of coherence or sudden thinning.
Each strand traveled along the deep pathways of the thigh, brushing the major muscle groups without disturbing their resting state, descending past the midpoint in a smooth, unbroken flow.
The silence of the movement remained absolute even as the distance from the core increased and the element moved farther from its usual resting place near the navel.
Adaptation recorded the bilateral division and the continued stability without difficulty, treating the split as a controlled decision rather than a fragmentation.
’Sigh...Where does she even get that kind of Dressing Sense!?’
And while he enjoyed the view to his hearts content...
’I am definitely having no trouble focusing...’
He did, in fact, have a lot of trouble focusing right now.
At the knees the strands adjusted again.
The joint space required a slight change in density to cross the complex structure of bone, tendon, and connective tissue cleanly.
The element answered by tightening further, remaining thin and precise as it passed through each knee and continued into the lower legs.
Calf pathways.
The long channels that ran along the shin.
The narrower junctions at the ankles.
The cold advanced without hesitation and without any of the wavering Alex had experienced on his own first attempt at upward movement in the sealed room.
Finally the twin filaments reached the soles of her feet.
’So its almost there, I can feel the shadows near her moving weirdly.’ Alex thought to himself.
They spread there in a thin, even layer, covering the underside of each foot from the heel to the base of the toes.
The emptiness settled against the skin from the inside, a precise cold presence exactly where her physical form met the soft forest ground.
The silence deepened until it felt almost dimensional.
The element was now present at the lowest point of her body, resting in the exact place where flesh and the shadow she cast on the earth touched each other.
Zara’s voice crossed the bond, clear and controlled.
’Listen Alex, do not only feel the next part,’
’Look at it properly while I do it,’
’Watch the outside as well as the inside,’
’The external change matters as much as the internal path,’
’You need both sets of information.’
Alex answered through the same channel without letting his visual attention drift from her feet.
’Ya, I will keep an eye on it, go ahead Zara.’
He looked down.
Zara moved the element the final distance.
She moved it outward, toward the shadow that stretched from her feet across the dim forest floor.
Alex felt the crossing through the bond at the same moment he saw the change with his own eyes.
A dark region formed outside her body, right where her feet met the ground.
The ordinary shadow she already cast deepened without expanding its outline or changing its basic shape.
The black of it grew denser, richer, more absolute, as if the shape on the forest floor had stopped being a simple absence of light and had become something that could hold weight, density, and intention.
The change was visible even in the already heavy shade under the trees.
The shadow no longer looked like a passive cast of her body.
It looked occupied, present and waiting.
Then he felt the sensation that came with the completed connection between the element inside her body and her shadow on the ground.
It was—
