Zara’s voice came through the darkness, calm and direct.
"Alex, now you should try to replicate what I did,"
"I have shown you the sensation of the element and how I moved it from the core to the eyes,"
"You felt the path and you felt the activation,"
"You have felt the chill when the vision settled,"
"So now try it yourself and see if you can make your own Shadow Element answer the same way."
Alex nodded once, even though she could not see the motion clearly in the sealed room.
The bond carried the agreement without any need for the gesture.
"Okay Zara, I will try."
"Start by trying to feel the Shadow Element in your Mana Heart first," Zara said.
"Do not reach for movement yet, just locate it,"
"Call it the way you call mana, but look for the cold and the emptiness instead of the usual pressure,"
"The element is already synchronized so it should be present somewhere in the system,"
"You only need to find where it is resting and make contact with it."
"Hmm... I will try to feel it."
Alex shifted his focus.
He pulled his attention away from the open bond and turned it fully inward, toward the place near his chest where the Mana Heart sat.
The organ answered immediately.
He could feel it with perfect clarity.
It was full of vitality and magic.
The steady, living rhythm of it pumping blood and processed mana through his body in the same continuous cycle it had maintained since the day it formed in the wreckage of his childhood room.
He still remembered creating it.
The stubborn refusal to accept the standard navel position because it felt too easy, too ordinary, too much like every other cultivator who had ever followed the textbook path without question.
He had looked at the conventional accumulation point and decided it was insufficient.
He had forced the gathering of mana into the actual heart instead, against every teaching available to a five year old, and the system had answered by giving him something that was no longer a static core at all.
A living processor.
A Mana Heart that learned.
He focused on that center and tried to call the Shadow Element the way he called ordinary mana.
At first there was only the familiar presence of circulating power and the quiet background work of Adaptation.
The Mana Heart continued its cycle without interruption.
Then, at the very edge of his perception, something else registered.
A faint absence.
A cold that did not belong to the ordinary magic moving through his system.
It sat just outside the main current, close enough to notice once he stopped looking only at the bright flow of mana, far enough that ordinary focus slid off it the moment attention wavered.
He felt as if he could grab it or touch it if he simply concentrated harder on that narrow margin between presence and emptiness.
So he did.
He narrowed his attention until the rest of the sealed room and even the open bond became secondary.
The cold edge grew slightly more distinct under the increased pressure.
It was still elusive and refusing to sit still under direct command.
Zara felt the attempt through the link.
He sensed her attention sharpen on her side of the bond, the quiet recognition that he was searching in the correct direction and that the element was beginning to respond to the call, but she did not speak.
She left him the silence he needed to keep the fragile contact from breaking.
The element did not come immediately.
The edge remained just out of reach, elusive in the same precise way the transmitted sensation had been elusive when she first sent it across the bond minutes earlier.
Alex adjusted his approach rather than forcing the same failed grip again.
He redirected the full weight of his Adaptation Aspect onto that narrow area and deliberately called up the memory of what Zara had shown him.
The cold that sat deeper than skin and deeper than ordinary temperature.
The emptiness that occupied space without filling it.
The silence that needed no volume to be absolute.
He reached with those qualities instead of with the ordinary will he used for mana circulation.
He invited the element the way she had invited it, rather than trying to seize it the way most people seized power when they first learned to move it.
Something changed.
He felt it.
The Shadow Element.
Somewhere near the Mana Heart, close enough that the two presences almost overlapped without merging into each other.
It responded to the call, but not with the seamless, practiced obedience Zara’s element had shown when she moved it along a known path, but with a clear, unmistakable acknowledgment that it had been addressed and had chosen to answer.
The cold was there.
The emptiness was there.
The silence was there.
He felt the same qualities she had transmitted across the bond, now rising from inside his own system instead of arriving from outside through the link.
Through the bond he felt Zara register the exact moment of contact.
She raised an eyebrow in the dark.
He sensed the small motion and the quiet flicker of surprise behind it, the recognition that he had located the element on the first serious attempt, but she still said nothing.
She kept the channel open and otherwise stayed completely silent so the new connection would not break under external distraction.
Alex held the contact carefully, afraid that any sudden shift of attention would make the element slip away again the way it had slipped during the earlier failed attempts.
He stayed with the cold and the emptiness and the silence until the presence felt stable enough to risk the next step.
Then he tried to make the element travel the way she had made hers travel.
He pictured the path she had demonstrated.
Outward from the center.
Upward through the chest.
Toward the throat and then the eyes.
He applied the same quality of invitation he had used to call the element in the first place, only now directed along a deliberate internal route instead of simply asking it to appear and remain.
On the first attempt the Shadow Element left the space near his Mana Heart and traveled a short distance upward, following the intention he had set.
The cold filament rose through the upper chest, thin and coherent, carrying the same empty silence it had held while resting.
It moved exactly as far as he had managed to push the invitation, responding to the direction without resistance and without the full seamless control Zara had displayed.
Then the filament wavered.
