Alex focused on what Zara had just said.
His eyes dropped back to the skill list still hanging in the shared view between them.
He found the entry almost immediately.
When he read the name, his heart skipped a hard unmistakable beat.
Aspect.
That word did not belong on someone else’s system interface.
Aspect was something only he had, or at least that was what he had always believed, locked to his bloodline and to him.
He had never once expected to see the word appear on another person’s panel.
He had not seen it in any record.
The word itself had never appeared outside his own interface.
✧ ✦ ✧
[ Skills : Shadow Vision, Silence Skin, Tendril Lash, Shadow Mantle, Aspect Activation (New!) ]
✧ ✦ ✧
Alex could not quite believe he was looking at it.
The text stayed exactly where it was, calm and final.
The bond carried the quiet weight of the moment between them, open and clear enough that he could feel Zara watching his reaction as closely as he was watching the panel.
"Is this what I think it is?" he asked, voice lower than before.
"Aspect Activation on your panel linked directly to me, that should not be possible..."
Zara’s answer was simple, and edged with the same quiet satisfaction he could already feel through the link.
"Check it yourself."
He focused on the skill the same way he focused on any system line that invited deeper inspection.
The description unfolded cleanly in front of him, the text sharp and deliberate.
✧ ✦ ✧
[ Skill : Aspect Activation ]
[ You have gained the ability to forcibly awaken and channel your Bonding Partner’s Aspect through the Shadow Bond.
Activation is instantaneous.
The Aspect answers the call.
Beware of the cost.
The longer the Aspect remains active through the bond, the heavier the toll becomes, on body, on will, and on the bond itself. ]
✧ ✦ ✧
Alex went still.
The words sat there with the same precision the system always used, yet the meaning behind them felt heavier than anything he had read since the day his own Aspect first awakened.
She could channel instantaneous, and it had a cost for overuse.
He turned his head to look at Zara.
She was already smirking.
Not the sharp, teasing kind she used when she wanted to fluster him.
This one was wider.
She was giddy, he could feel it.
It was the expression of someone who had just been handed a weapon she had not expected to own and was already imagining the edges of what it could do.
The oversized fur coat shifted slightly as she settled her weight, chin tilted just enough to make the pride obvious.
Alex exhaled slowly.
He read the entire description a second time, carefully, line by line.
"You can use my Aspect actively," he said at last.
"Through the bond instantly and the cost hits you the entire time it stays on, on body, will, and the bond itself if we push it too far or leave it running too long."
Zara’s smirk did not fade.
If anything, it deepened at the careful way he listed the dangers.
"That is what it says," she answered.
"I read it the same moment you did,"
"The system was very clear about the risk,"
"It was also very clear about the fact that the ability exists now,"
"I did not ask for it,"
"It simply appeared when the bond finished evolving."
Alex let the silence sit for a moment while his mind turned the information over.
The clinical part of him was already listing variables.
Range, duration, whether she could activate it against his will or only with some form of consent.
Whether the toll scaled with how hard the Aspect was pushed.
He pushed those questions aside for later and focused on the larger pattern forming in front of him.
Zara spoke before he could finish the thought.
"You gained the Shadow Element after using your Aspect on the bond continuously," she said.
Her voice had settled into something more thoughtful, the giddy edge still present but no longer dominating the tone.
"You do not have a shadow-specific bloodline,"
"Evolvari is evolution, a normal bloodline should not have given you a possibility to gain any pure elemental affinity like that on its own, but yours did,"
"Now you have gained the shadow element because of the bond, because you kept pushing Adaptation into the connection between us for years, especially during the final resonance,"
"So maybe you took something that was mine, shadow, and in return..."
She gestured lightly at the skill still floating between them.
"I received the ability to reach for something that is yours,"
"Your Aspect, it feels like an exchange, and a balanced one,"
"I do not know the exact rules yet,"
"This is as new to me as it is to you,"
"I have never heard of a bond doing anything this complete, or this quickly."
Alex nodded once.
Maybe that was the case, or maybe it was something else entirely.
But the logic held, because it was the kind of symmetry the system seemed to favor when it decided two things were meant to remain linked.
"It might be exactly that," he said.
"Some kind of equal exchange unique to this particular bond,"
"Mom told me years ago that every Shadow Bond is different,"
"That the form it takes depends on the people tied together and the pressure they put on the connection over time,"
"She said no two bonds ever grow the same way."
Zara’s expression shifted into something closer to recognition, the fondness from earlier still lingering underneath the calculation.
"I have read about other bonds," she said.
"Older ones, records from the archives and from the few Shadow Guards who lived long enough to leave detailed notes behind,"
"Power sharing is possible, there are documented cases where one partner could borrow strength, or senses, or even limited techniques from the other for short periods,"
"But those cases all required decades of continuous bonding before the exchange stabilized enough to be usable in real combat, sometimes centuries,"
"Ours has been active for seven years, seven,"
"If this is real, and the system is treating Aspect Activation as a permanent skill, then this bond might be the first in recorded history to reach true power sharing this early."
The weight of that statement settled between them.
Alex felt it through the bond as clearly as he felt his own pulse.
Surprise, calculation and a quiet, almost reluctant pride.
He let the thought finish forming, then turned his attention back to the rest of her skill list.
