Chapter 175: You are pregnant.
At the hospital...
The doctor smiled as she studied the report, then looked up at Elena. "Congratulations, Mrs. Rowan. You are pregnant."
Elena’s breath hitched in her throat. For a moment, she stared at the doctor, unable to process the words.
"Pregnant?" The word came out as a faint whisper.
A radiant smile slowly spread across her face. Joy and surprise crashed over her all at once. Her hand flew to her stomach.
"Are you sure?"
The doctor chuckled. "Yes, I am sure." She turned the sonography report toward Elena and pointed at the image. "You are carrying twins."
Elena’s surprise deepened. "Twins?"
"Yes. You should inform your husband. I’m sure he’ll be overjoyed."
Elena was speechless. She slowly lowered her gaze to her stomach and gently caressed it, as though she could somehow feel the two tiny lives growing inside her.
"My babies..." Her eyes glistened with tears of happiness.
But then, a shadow crossed her face.
She remembered her first pregnancy—the child she had lost, the pain she had endured, and the helplessness she had felt when she couldn’t protect her baby. Her fingers trembled slightly against her stomach.
’Not this time.’
She would do everything in her power to protect these babies.
"Mommy will protect you," she murmured under her breath. "I won’t let anything happen to you."
"Mrs. Rowan." The doctor’s voice barely registered. "Mrs. Rowan... Are you listening to me?"
The woman waved a hand in front of Elena’s face.
Elena finally snapped out of her thoughts. She realized she had completely zoned out and immediately looked embarrassed.
"Uh," she smiled awkwardly, "I am sorry... I was overwhelmed by the news..."
"I can understand. Here, take this." The doctor pushed the prescription toward her. "However, you need to be careful. The first three months are particularly delicate, and since you are carrying twins, you’ll need to take extra precautions."
She pointed at the prescription. "Take your medication on time, get plenty of rest, avoid unnecessary stress, and contact me immediately if you experience any unusual discomfort."
"Of course."
She placed the prescription in her handbag, gathered the reports, and walked out of the office.
The moment she stepped into the hallway, her smile returned. She couldn’t stop thinking about the two tiny lives growing inside her.
"Elias..." Her lips stretched even wider. "He is going to be so happy. I have to tell him."
She reached for her phone. Her finger hovered over his name. Then she stopped.
"Wait." A mischievous smile appeared on her face. "I can’t tell him over the phone. I’ll surprise him."
Ideas immediately began racing through her mind.
Maybe she could prepare a special dinner. Or perhaps she could place the ultrasound photographs in a beautifully wrapped box and let him discover them himself.
"Yes." Her eyes sparkled. "I’ll tell him to come home early."
She finally pressed his number.
After several rings, Elias answered.
"Hello."
The sound of his voice made Elena’s heart leap. She almost blurted out the news. But she managed to restrain herself.
"Elias, can you come home early? I’ve something to tell you."
"I also have something to discuss with you. See you soon."
"That’s great." Elena was so overjoyed that she didn’t catch the gravity of his tone. "I’ll be waiting for you."
She ended the call, unaware of the storm brewing on the other end.
On the other end, Elias’s expression was deadly serious as he put the phone on the table. His gaze sharpened as he looked at Owen.
"Are you sure you have not made a mistaken?" he asked.
Owen nodded grimly. "One hundred percent reality. Noah and Victor are partners."
He pushed his tablet across the desk. "They were also seen together at a business dinner."
A photograph appeared on the screen. Victor Kane and Noah Sinclair were standing together, clearly engaged in conversation.
Elias stared at the image. His anger intensified with every passing second.
"These bastards are teaming up against me," he muttered. "Stealing the company’s confidential files? Do they really think they can defeat me with these tricks?"
He shoved the tablet back to Owen. "It seems I’ve been too lenient with my enemies. It’s time I showed them what a real fight looks like."
He ground his teeth. "What about those encrypted emails? Are they real or fake?"
"The email chain itself is real," Owen replied. "But the accounts appear to be fake."
Elias paused. Something close to hope flashed in his eyes. "You mean the person behind the account might not be Elena?"
Owen shrugged. "It’s possible. But I can’t say that with certainty yet. I need to verify the account holders’ identities and trace where the messages actually originated. Give me some time."
Elias fired up in frustration. "Why is everyone taking so long?"
His palm struck the desk.
"Marcus still hasn’t recovered the surveillance footage, and now you can’t give me a definite answer either. What the hell is going on?"
Owen swallowed. He had rarely seen Elias lose his composure like this.
"I’ll have the results soon," he assured him. "Give me a few more hours."
"Fine." Elias rose from his chair. "Before midnight, I want a complete update." His voice was cold and commanding. "Tomorrow, I want that traitor exposed."
Owen gave a firm nod. "We’ll find the culprit before sunrise."
Elias headed toward the door but stopped in his tracks and turned back to Owen. "Where is Elena now? Still at the office?"
Owen took out his phone. "Let me check."
He dialed Elena’s secretary.
A few rings later, Nina answered.
"Hello?"
"Nina, it’s Owen. Is Madam Elena still at the office, or has she already left?"
"She left," replied Nina. "She said she was going to the hospital for a checkup."
Owen glanced at Elias. "I see..."
"Is something wrong?" Nina asked. "Do you need her?"
"No... It’s nothing. Actually, Mr. Rowan wanted to confirm if she were still at the office. Anyway, thanks Nina."
He ended the call.
"Madam has gone to the hospital."
"Hospital?" Elias’s eyebrows drew closer.
Then he remembered.
Elena had complained about feeling uncomfortable over the past few days.
He had noticed it. But with everything happening at the office, he had been so consumed by the crisis that he hadn’t even found the time to take her to the hospital himself.
Now she had gone alone.
A wave of guilt struck him.
’What the hell is wrong with you, Elias?’ he cursed himself under his breath. ’You bowed to take care of her for the rest of your life. This is how you take care of her?’
Without wasting another moment, he spun around and left the office in a hurry.
