Burned honey and wet iron reached Dane before the bars cleared.
A kettle knocked against Grib’s leg on the other side, its resin folding with a viscous drag. Two hook shafts struck the rim, one with a flat scrape and the other with three quick catches. Kett worked the lever. Stone rose through the wall.
Grib entered under the weight of the kettle. "Both hooks, a full measure of correction resin, and my seal still stuck to yesterday’s fault. If Seventeen cracks another part, the damage line starts with Core enthusiasm."
Kett’s stylus scratched. He gave the joke no help.
The kettle settled on the floor. Grib laid the hooks beside it; the flat end rang once, while three barbs worried a link of chain before he pulled them free.
"Compliance upgrade first," Kett said. "Reclamation review if the offer fails. Controlled confirmation if the trace remains mixed."
Under Dane’s tongue, three ordinary coppers held their places. One pinned Vera’s chalk-threaded fringe to the cracked root. One waited behind the crooked tooth. The third sat in the rear gutter. The named kill order kept tugging his split hinge toward Brant’s shield.
Nothing Grib carried touched him.
"Projection changes no material," Kett said. "It grants no trial Control. It demonstrates fit."
The flat hook dipped into resin with a thick plunge. Heat rolled out from the kettle, crossed the floor, and entered every crack in Dane without bringing a single drop with it.
His lid closed with both corners reaching the rim together.
The left side matched the right. Its pin turned in a cushioned seat, and the crooked tooth cleared Dane’s tongue. The phantom joint opened and closed again, quick enough to choose the end of a bite instead of being carried through it.
Dane wanted that hinge before he had finished feeling it.
The projection cycled the joint twice more. Ownership pressure spread through the reinforced grain instead of twisting the left corner loose. Hunger crowded his mouth, yet the shell kept its shape; a bite could end where he chose rather than where damage exhausted itself. The body offered room for decisions he had been making inside splinters and failed alignment.
Warm support gathered around the cracked root. The tooth seated straight but did not go numb; its point remained present in his body-map, something he could still press, angle, and trust. Resin armor spread over the raw floor of his mouth. A remembered hook struck there and slid away without opening the abrasion.
Another impact reached the lid. The new grain took it across the whole shell. Brant’s shield no longer promised to split Dane at the hinge. Even the lure changed. Scent gathered, thinned, and disappeared at the edge of his attention, ready to be spoiled before Tess saw value or Holt mistook damage for need.
The body fit him, and then the kill order found it.
The fast hinge opened on Vera Pike’s next plate; lid force knocked Brant Cole’s shield aside; refined lure drew Tess Crowe across the chalk; resin armor kept Dane whole through the struggle until Brother Holt became the last body in reach.
After all four names, the phantom hinge closed cleanly, and part of Dane still begged to keep it. He wanted the supported root and the unbroken shell even after they had shown him their price. He hated the want and kept feeling it.
Saint Rust scraped inside Nate’s retained knife vessel. "A perfect hinge answers the hand that fitted it, cupboard."
The projection held while Kett spoke over the quiet kettle.
"Reclamation uses the barbed hook to open the hinge channels: conversion medium drains through the spoon; staff lower the shell into a boil rack; awakened variance rises into the waste skim; rooted teeth, usable grain, hinges, lockplate, and brass return to stock."
Dane felt his crooked tooth outlast him, waiting on a tray while the part that remembered June cooled in the skim.
Grib lifted something small in a pair of tongs. Metal ticked against metal near Dane’s front rim.
"Clean acceptance disk," Kett said. "Open-mouth seal toward the asset. Wet black wax toward the tongue. Tongue contact begins routing. Swallowing records acceptance under monster-asset procedure."
The tongs stopped.
Grib asked, "If the order opens him before I push, whose seal owns the swallow?"
"The procedure records intake. It has no intent field. Your seal remains the presenting mark."
Grib’s grip tightened hard enough to make the tongs click.
Dane pressed the copper at Vera’s fringe into the root. The coin behind his tooth rested in the shallow groove leading toward the rear gutter. Those three pieces of dirty metal were the only loose things his body had not arranged for acceptance.
As the disk approached, phantom support warmed the cracked root again. His split hinge anticipated the clean close. Hunger pulled at the wet wax and promised that swallowing would end the ache, even while the four-name order waited inside every improvement. Dane held the rear-gutter coin against the slope with the side of his tongue until the command took that muscle too.
The disk touched his front rim.
His mouth opened without permission.
The named order raised the lid and shaped his tongue into a smooth intake ramp. Wet wax pulled toward the center of that ramp, carrying the phantom hinge, supported tooth, stronger lid, and armored mouth with it.

Dane forced his crooked left front tooth beneath the disk’s lower edge.
The cracked root shifted. Pain crossed the hinge, but the point rose. Clean copper tipped sideways, slipped from the tongs, and lodged in the front groove above the intake. The tooth pinned it there with the wet-wax face turned away from Dane’s tongue.
The command tried to correct the swallow.
His tongue surged beneath the clean disk and struck the ordinary copper waiting behind the tooth. That coin shot backward along the shallow groove and hit the rear-gutter copper rim to rim. The rear coin climbed over it, tipped onto the raw mouth floor, and rolled down the curve the command had made of Dane’s tongue.
The first coin bounced forward and settled behind the front groove. The copper at Vera’s fringe stayed trapped under his tongue. The rear coin kept moving.
Dane tried to catch it with the tongue’s left edge. The order held the muscle flat for the clean token and turned his attempted block into a steeper ramp.
Wet wax pulled downward. The cracked tooth held the acceptance disk above the drop.
The dirty copper crossed the old abrasion beneath it and reached the intake first.
It fell beyond Dane’s tongue.
Heat ripped up from the lower channel and entered the cracked root. The coin lodged below his reach with dungeon grit packed into its stamped relief, old biological trace in the worn edge, and a film of conversion residue from Dane’s mouth. The clean routing pressure seized that cargo and choked on it before wet wax could record the token.
Hunger closed around the inaccessible copper and demanded living flesh as payment for a coin that offered neither feed nor repair.
The phantom hinge missed its next close. The supported root emptied around Dane’s broken tooth. Resin armor peeled from the mouth-floor abrasion, and the stronger lid collapsed into the same split grain he had begun with.

The named kill order remained in Dane’s tag. Vera’s fringe still pulled toward contact. The projected body was gone.
His two free coppers tried to follow the ingested one. Dane spread his tongue across the intake lip, pressing one coin against the fringe at the root and trapping the other behind the front groove. The posture dragged across the existing abrasion without opening a new line.
The clean acceptance disk stayed sideways above them. Its wet wax tugged at empty air while Dane’s cracked tooth trembled over the edge.
Tongs scraped the front rim.
"Routing is closed," Kett said. "A second push creates another trace under your seal. Resin contact would join it."
The tongs withdrew as Grib lifted the kettle without pouring it, hook shafts clanging against the side. "That measure leaves as full as it came. We practice before my seal touches the fork again."
"Offer pending," Kett said as his stylus moved. "Interference suspected. Controlled feeding simulation required. Stable compliance may restore upgrade routing. Repeated interference preserves reclamation authority."
Grib carried the resin and both hooks through the route. Kett followed with the black-wax tablet. The bars descended after them and sealed on three impacts.
Dane remained F-2 with Control unchanged: two ordinary coppers lay within reach, one dirty copper burned below the intake, Vera’s fringe stayed at the cracked root, and the whole clean token waited sideways in the front groove while four names pulled at his injured mouth.
Wax pressure spread through the ownership tag and began building a practice room across his thoughts.
