Vera’s last words were still fading through the lock when the ward grit on Dane’s lid tightened against his ownership nail.
Her touch had ended. The brass had cleared. Nothing living remained inside the eighteen-inch service tunnel.
Brackenvault pulled on the contact anyway.
"Shield right. Hook rear," Brant said.
The shield rim ground into the stone beside the lower gap. Holt’s belt line clicked taut at Vera’s back. Farther down the corridor, Tess set the hook butt with one hard knock. Four sets of boots found their weight.
Heat crossed the ownership tag beneath Dane’s brass bands, climbed the nails in his lid, and reached the shallow impression left by the plate. The stale contact flared through his grain. Outside, jointed brass slapped leather, unfolded, and struck the mouth of the tunnel.
Vera sucked in a breath. "It’s taking the plate inward. Pull me."
Holt had the line under strain before she finished.
The brass plate scraped into the tunnel, each straightening joint punching its impact through stone into Dane’s base. Leather rasped after it while Vera’s boots dragged twice, the belt cord thrummed, and Brant’s shield hit the floor hard enough to jar the lockplate.
The Core drove the plate toward Dane while Dane’s mouth opened to meet it. Once his teeth caught brass, his tongue could haul on the sleeve fixed to Vera’s glove. Eighteen inches of stone still stood between her fingers and him, and Brackenvault meant to spend every one. The last joint cleared the inner lip as the command broke across Dane’s body: raise the lid; brace the tongue; show coin; take the mage’s hand.
His split hinge wrenched against the pin. The raw floor of his mouth bunched beneath three coppers. Teeth pressed out of their slots while lure warmth ran over his bands, inviting the corridor to come closer and promising his hunger that warm leather would lead to meat.
The shield bearer would resist. The priest would pull. The small one with the hook would cut. Hunger weighed them by trouble and saved their bodies for later.
Dane tried the sequence that had kept his lid shut.
Hurt. The Core already held the hinge.
Hold. His lid rose through the effort.
He had one choice left, and Brackenvault had put its command in almost all of him.
His crooked left front tooth scraped the inner board.
The filed point caught where the straight teeth passed cleanly. Dane pressed into that scrape. The rest of his mouth spread around the incoming plate; the crooked tooth shoved across the bite, dragged its root through living grain, and lodged beneath the lid’s inner lip.
The hinge pulled upward. Dane drove the tooth harder in the wrong direction.
Root struck wood. The lid jammed for one pulse.
Pain ran from the tooth into the split hinge and came back hotter. His tongue kicked. One copper cut into the old mouth-floor abrasion, widening it beneath the other two. Hunger caught the metal edge, the leather scent, the ward heat, and the pain, then tried to swallow all four.
The plate scraped nearer. Its last joint knocked the underside of his lid. The leather sleeve drew tight behind it.
"It has the sleeve," Vera said. Her next breath shook once. "If that seam crosses, the glove follows."
"Again," Brant said. "Together."
Vera’s heels grated backward. Holt hauled until the belt line hummed. His right boot lost stone, caught, and lost it again.
Tess dragged the hook shaft across the cord behind him. "Heel on the shaft, Holt. Now."
"There."
The cord dipped over the hook. Holt found the brace, and the next pull struck Dane through brass, leather, and rock.
Brant drove the shield rim into the line of force. His boots shoved once, stopped, then shoved again with a grunt he failed to swallow.
The first joint retreated. The second caught at the tunnel mouth. Brass hammered stone while Dane’s commanded teeth closed around the last length.
Automatic repair heat reached the crooked root. It tried to seat the tooth straight. Dane kept pressure on the wrong angle, forcing new grain to form around a mistake the Core wanted gone.
The root cracked.
The break sounded inside him with a wet snap. One wall of the root shifted into his tongue. His hinge tore farther when the lid lurched past the obstruction, and the three coppers drove into the raw floor hard enough to fill his mouth with their separate rims.
Dane held the tooth sideways.
Ownership pressure bore down again. The cracked walls ground against each other while conversion tissue crowded the split, trying to make the root bear a straight bite. Dane leaned harder across it. The tooth shifted a hair and sawed the same place in his tongue, yet stayed in the way.
His front teeth struck the last brass joint and skidded into the sleeve, stretching leather across his mouth while chalk rasped along his tongue. Outside, Holt cried out as the line snatched him forward; the hook shaft jumped against stone, and Tess’s boots answered with a sliding stamp.
"Stay on the brace," Tess said. "I’ve got the hook."
Brant made a sound from low in his chest. The shield hit again.
The plate tore free in three uneven jerks. Brass left Dane’s teeth. A narrow strip of chalk-threaded leather remained between them, ripped from the sleeve while the rest raced back through the tunnel.
The command shoved him after the withdrawing plate. His tongue struck the tunnel floor, and stone flayed the already-torn surface. His mouth snapped on empty air, crooked tooth dragging through muscle as it missed the brass by less than the width of a coin. Hunger drove a second bite. The displaced root caught beneath the lid, spoiled the timing, and made his teeth close on the leather fringe alone.
Outside, metal folded against leather. The belt cord slackened by a handspan.
"Vera?" Brant asked.
She answered after two breaths. "I can move every finger. Skin’s whole."
Glove leather creaked four times, paused, then once more. Three small stones clicked against their settings.
"All three wards," she said. "The sleeve lost a strip."
Holt spoke a prayer too softly for Dane to catch. A thin gold pressure passed over the tunnel entrance and stopped outside the chalk. "No blood on the leather. No blood path through the ward."
Before Vera trapped it against her thigh, the belt clasp tapped stone twice in an uneven rhythm; another glove creak followed under breathing that still ran ahead of her steady voice.
Only then did Brant let the shield rim shift. The buckle on his splint gave a sharp tick. His breath went short.
Vera heard it too. "You pulled the dressing."
"A spot. It hurts enough to prove the arm’s still there."
"Keep it that way. I have enough things trying to remove parts."
Dane forced his lid down around the broken angle of the tooth. The root stayed seated in him, cracked and displaced, its inner wall pressed against his tongue. Three coppers rolled together behind it. The stolen strip landed across them, carrying Vera’s chalk, glove leather, and the heat Brackenvault had forced through both.

Holt’s belt line stayed tight. Brant kept the shield between the lower gap and the breathing Dane heard beyond it.
"Tell me the order," Brant said.
Holt took his time. "The room seized the ward. The plate went inward. His mouth followed the route. The tooth jammed before the plate cleared. I won’t swear why it jammed."
"Keep the cause open."
The hook tip touched stone near the chalk and withdrew. Tess had moved close enough to listen to Dane’s mouth. "A copper scraped when the root broke. Same place as the lock answer."
Dane chose the coin nearest the tooth. He moved it one short line against the cracked root and let it fall back among the other two. His tongue spasmed and held the coins still.
Glove leather worked through five separate pulls; the last caught before it loosened. "Holt, put the interruption under my seal. It happened before my hand entered reach. Keep restraint and trained baitcraft open."
Holt’s prayer case clicked shut. "The guild may take the seal badly."
"I know. Write it anyway."
Brant’s shield edge settled back into the floor. "Danger goes first. The interruption stays. If we return, the circuit breaks away before leather can carry the pull to flesh."
"Then build it that way," Vera said. She asked for nothing else.
Tess eased the hook rearward. "It used her ward to bait him."
The ownership nail burned deeper, carrying the Core’s answer through Dane’s lid.

Cold mineral air breathed from above the far door. The exit lock clicked once.
"Move on one," Brant said as he lifted the shield. "Tess first, hook low. Holt takes the line. I follow. Vera closes."
A second lock click brought stone grinding inside the wall channels.
"One."
Tess ran. Her light footfalls crossed the room, the hook scraping beside her. The first bar began its descent before she reached the threshold. It struck a guide tooth and threw chips across the floor; several rattled against Dane’s base.
Holt backed after her with the main cord rasping through his good hand. The line snagged low. The planted hook clanged, and tension jumped through the belt clip.
"Cheap loop," Tess said from beyond the doorway. "Hold still."
One knife stroke cut leather. The small retaining loop snapped away while the main withdrawal cord stayed taut to Vera.
Holt’s prayer case knocked his hip as he crossed the threshold. Brant followed with a heavier step, the splint buckle ticking at every second pace. Halfway to the door, his boot rolled on a stone chip.
His shield struck the wall. The splint buckle snapped tight and dragged a grunt from him.
The belt clasp behind him slammed tight.
"I have your belt," Vera said. "Give me your weight, not that arm."
Brant found the floor again. "That was the belt."
"I noticed. Keep moving."
He crossed after Holt. Vera came last, brass joints rattling softly beneath her glove and the cut loop tapping against the cord.
The bars ground lower.
"Next circuit breaks at the first wrong pull," she said as her steps reached the doorway. "Distance stays mine."
Her belt clip clacked once beyond the threshold. The main cord slid after it.
The door slammed between them and Dane. Three bars dropped into their seats, each impact carrying through the room and up his cracked root.
He was alone with a worse split hinge, a tongue torn against the root wall, the widened mouth-floor abrasion, three ordinary coppers, and one strip of Vera’s sleeve that his body wanted to spread across the lure slope.
Dane pressed the fringe beneath his tongue, beyond the reach of the lure folds.
Brackenvault finished reading the refusal.

Heat left the crooked tooth for one pulse.
Then the command routes opened beneath him, searching for names.
