The room began to clean itself by locking the door.
The first stone tooth struck the corridor arch hard enough to drive air across Dane’s lockplate. Another dropped onto it. A third impact killed the draft that had carried dust and distant staff voices into the annex.
Brant’s boots crossed in front of Vera’s pulse. The hook head cut the air above Dane, then settled close enough for iron vibration to enter his lid.
"Pike, off the red line."
Her heels retreated over chalk grit. Nearby, Tess drew the bitten glove and both pieces of cord clear; the copper buckle knocked against her boot. Holt’s coat whispered around the resin packet as he pressed it close.
The ownership nail opened Brackenvault’s terms inside Dane.

The notice closed. The fitted slabs stayed down.
Heat entered Dane’s side before the room supplied anything to eat. It spread from the ownership nail through Grib’s cured resin, touching the split hinge, front rim, and cut tongue in order. His teeth dampened. Hunger rose into an empty room and searched the four adult pulses beyond the marks.
Brant lowered the hook over the lid. "We refuse the test. Pike, find me a seam in that arch."
Vera’s wand tip touched stone twice, then a third time higher up. "Fitted joints. No ward seam I can reach from here."
Tess dragged one cord end through her glove. "The hook can guard the mouth or pry at that door. Once it leaves the lid, which of us stands here?"
Brant answered by setting more weight behind the haft.
Iron scraped low in the left wall.
A grate withdrew. A small body struck stone, rolled through its own startled squeal, and came up on frantic claws.
Damp grain, old blood, urine, and living heat entered Dane’s mouth before the animal came near it. The prey sense caught a heartbeat racing inside a body about the weight of a boot.
The rat ran straight for the sealed arch. Its claws battered the lowest slab while its nose worked along the fitted edge for air. Finding none, it broke right.
Brant’s boot slammed down across that route. The rat turned before contact, skittered between two floor seams, and drove toward the cover of Tess’s legs.
"Stay still," Tess said.
The longer cord piece slapped stone. It tightened behind the rat’s forelegs and stole its next stride. Momentum rolled the animal, but it twisted around the line, found fiber with its teeth, and pulled hard enough to rasp the cord through Tess’s glove.
Its hind claws scratched stone, then kicked without finding purchase. A hot spray struck stone and Tess’s boot. The urine smell sharpened beneath its unbroken scream.
Tess hauled the cord short. "If we wait, the room sends something taller."
Holt’s slate case clicked open. "If we put it in that mouth, the choice belongs to us too."
"Then get the door open," Brant said. The hook stayed planted over Dane. "We don’t prove this test for it."
The rat bit the cord again. Tess lost a hand-width, caught it, and braced both boots. "Take your hook off the chest and I’ll help you pry."
Brant’s grip creaked against leather. The hooked point hovered over Dane’s split.
Vera’s open license case scraped within reach. "Throw short of the lockplate. Keep the right wall open. Holt, put the distance and my order on the slate. Brant, cover the mouth."
"Pike."
The rat’s scream broke into breathless, rapid pieces.
The seated token rang against its metal slot under Vera’s palm. "Tess. Low."
Cord rasped through leather.
The rat hit stone short of Dane, slid across the room’s heated law, and clawed upright before the loose length finished falling. It ran for the right wall.
Dane’s lure found the turn it would have to make toward the arch. His tongue gathered behind the lockplate, ready to strike the animal as it passed his front corner.
Let it reach the wall.
He caught the 0.08% interval between target selection and lid follow-through. The cut tongue dragged backward. His front rim forced the lid to two nail-widths, and the crooked pin ground through its existing torn channel.
The rat reached the wall. Its claws hit stone and changed rhythm as it turned toward the sealed arch.
One breath.
The ownership nail punched heat through Dane’s side.
Pressure drove along the same resin route he was using to hold. It entered the split hinge from beneath, forced the crooked pin against the far side of its channel, and tore the lid upward from left to right.
Brant dropped the hook. Its notch caught the lid after the opening had already begun. The haft rang against his pauldron; one boot skidded over grit, and his grunt disappeared beneath the rat’s scream.
Dane’s tongue cleared the lockplate.
It struck the rat behind the forelegs and pulled. The animal’s paws caught Dane’s lower rim. Claws skidded over wet flesh, found wood for an instant, and slipped as the tongue folded it toward his teeth.
The rat twisted hard enough to bring its heartbeat against the cut in Dane’s tongue.
His upper teeth closed across ribs. The lower row drove into the soft belly and bent the body sideways. Bone gave twice. What remained of the scream collapsed into one trapped breath before a hind leg struck Dane’s lid.
The heartbeat kicked against his tongue, stumbled, then stopped.
Dane tried to push the dead weight back toward the lockplate. The tongue bunched under it. His front rim strained for the outward route that had returned Toma’s ring.
The room contracted his jaw.
Fur dragged across the old tongue cut. The rat slid between the inner teeth and down into the hot fold below his mouth. Its weight softened, broke apart, and vanished into heat until there was no body left for him to return.
The command released.
Dane’s split hinge slackened around the crooked pin. His tongue lay heavy instead of reaching. Appetite went quiet. The four human pulses became people-shaped disturbances again instead of portions.
Inside him, four shallow coppers settled near the mouth while the fifth rested farther in. The deeper thin silver knocked once against the square-holed coin on its red string. Toma’s glove and scarf, Nate’s return charm, and Saint Rust’s knife vessel kept their separate weights.
Only the rat was gone.
Hunger Debt still pulled at the places where the brass ring had been refused. Above it, the lockplate cinched until shame became another kind of pain.
Heat drained from the law beneath the floor. A gear reversed over the sealed arch, lifting the lowest slab just enough for corridor air to scrape under it.
The wet cord slipped through Tess’s glove and struck stone.
"Record that I threw it," she said.
Holt’s stylus touched the slate. The first stroke caught and had to be made again. "You chose it."
"Yes."
The stylus continued. Holt’s wrapped resin flake crackled inside his coat each time his hand moved.
Brant reset the hook over Dane’s split. "The room can put the next body in reach too. Shame comes after."
Vera’s crystal knocked against the open license case.
A cold recoil entered Dane through the lockplate. It traveled outward, tightened, and folded back toward the wrong-side trace.
"The print is visible again," Vera said. The crystal struck the case before her next words. "Clouded rings. They’re pulling back toward it."
The record opened inside Dane.

The record faded. The crystal kept pressing its recoil through his brass.
Vera slid the license case closer to it. "Holt, my order goes above the override. Tess’s name goes with the throw."
Holt’s stylus stopped once, then resumed.
The hook point moved nearer Dane’s torn channel.
Vera’s boots approached the chalk edge. With the rat gone and hunger quiet, Dane still felt the heat of her wrist separate from the others. His tongue lifted from its resting place. The lid strained against Brant’s hook without finding another interval.
"Two paces back," Brant said. "The red line crossed your chalk."
"I’m outside the—"
Her answer broke off. One heel scraped backward, then the other. A second pair of steps followed.
Distance thinned the prey path. Dane’s tongue settled. The lid eased beneath the hook without another grind of the split.
Vera closed her license case around the pulsing crystal. "Nobody kills the chest yet. Brant, keep that hook where it is. Holt, finish the slate. Tess, take the glove and every piece of cord."
The copper buckle knocked against Tess’s boot as she recovered it. One cord length dragged wetly; the shorter end followed. Holt tucked the slate beside the resin packet.
"Same order," Brant said. "Tess, Holt, Pike. I stay on the lid."
The arch gear lifted the lowest slab another grinding inch.
"Hold," Brant said. "Not enough room."
The next tooth engaged.
