Vera Pike’s yellow chalk snapped when Dane’s lid climbed another finger-width.
The broken tip bounced twice inside the bite line. Each tap came up through the floor and into Dane’s fixed base. No glove scraped after it.
Brant’s brass hook hit the lockplate. Metal shrieked against metal, and the force drove through Dane’s front rim until Brant’s rear boot skidded over stone. A grunt followed. The hook stayed in the notch and kept the lid from clearing Vera’s forearm.
The hook pinned the lid below Vera’s forearm. Dane’s tongue flattened around the brass, found the remaining gap, and whipped toward the heat above her wand cuff. Her heel twisted. Cloth whispered across a tooth. Dane bit where her wrist had been and came away with one loose cuff thread caught against his gum.
Brant hauled the hook down.
"Back another pace."
"My heels are behind the line."
"Your cuff wasn’t."
Vera’s boots retreated beyond the fresh chalk mark. Brant stepped into the space she gave up, his breathing rougher now, and held Dane’s lid at a slant until the opening command lost its clean pull.
The lid crashed shut on Dane’s tongue.
Pain ran from the raw cut, through his lifted front rim, and into the crooked left hinge. His five shallow coppers jumped. One rang against a tooth. Deeper inside, beyond his control, the thin silver and the square-holed coin on its red string knocked together beneath the scarf and return charm.
The lure polished every copper it could reach.
The room smelled of heated brass, chalk dust, and leather. Dane’s own blood ran warm behind his teeth.
Saliva cooled along his front rim. The loose cuff thread clung there too, carrying Vera’s soap and sweat close enough that his tongue kept trying to gather it in. He pressed the torn muscle against his lower teeth until the ownership command made the lid buck under Brant’s hook again.
His body rebuilt the attack before the pain finished. Vera’s heel had turned before her cuff moved. Brant’s hook had descended from above. On the next opening, a sideways bite could take the wrist first and let the tongue drag her shoulder against the rim while Brant fought the lid.
One rhythm from June’s laugh still clung to Vera’s voice, useful to hunger after it discarded the woman who owned it.
The knife wedged behind Toma’s torn glove shifted against Dane’s inner wall. Saint Rust’s voice followed through the metal.
"Your left pin will not endure that contest twice, cupboard. Cross those loads again and the band will peel your side open."
Dane’s tongue worked beneath the hook, seeking a new angle around it. Each tremor widened the cut and dripped another taste of himself behind his teeth. Hunger accepted that taste, found it insufficient, and reached past the brass for Vera again.
Holt spoke without coming closer. "The lid turned before Brant took its full weight."
"How far?" Vera asked.
"Too little to measure from here. Too much to call nothing."
The ownership tag heated again. Dane’s lid strained into the hook, and Brant’s boot leather complained against the floor seam before the metal gave even a hair.
Brant shifted his rear boot back into the floor seam. "We have enough to leave."
"We have enough for us," Vera said. "The next crew won’t know which command nearly cost me a hand. One remote pass. Then we leave."
Cord rasped through Tess’s fingers near the right wall. "Give me the spare glove and one buckle. I can offer it a hand none of us needs back."
"Explain it before you throw anything," Brant said.
"Glove on a cord. First swing with Vera well back. Second with her at the inner mark. If the mouth changes targets, we stop. If the cord catches, I let go. I am sentimentally attached to every finger I own."
The hook creaked as Dane pushed against it. Brant drove his rear heel deeper into the floor seam.
Vera’s voice went flat and procedural. "One swing at each position. Tess releases on my word. No real hand crosses the inner mark. If I cross it without stating why, Brant takes my belt and pulls until both heels clear."
"I’ll pull on your order or a crossed line," Brant said.
Leather rustled in the supply sack. Tess packed a copper buckle into one spare guild glove, closed its fingers around the weight, and secured an intact cord at the wrist. She tested the knot with three hard tugs Dane felt through the floor.
Fresh chalk began scraping outside Vera’s first line.
"Outer arc," Vera said. "Exactly three inches beyond the inner mark. Nothing crosses it except the false hand and cord."
The broken chalk tip remained where it had fallen inside the bite line.
Holt moved left; Dane tracked him by the drag of slate leather against his coat. "I will call only movement order."
"Call what happens. Leave cause for the report," Vera said. "Brant?"
The hook settled harder over Dane’s lockplate. "Notch seated. Send when you mean it."
Tess let the weighted glove strike stone once. Her next breath snagged before she steadied it.
"Send it," Vera said.
Cord slid. The false hand swung across the outer arc, then the inner mark, leather skimming the floor.
The buckle clicked.
All five shallow coppers answered. They leaped toward the mouth under the lure’s command, brightening themselves against Dane’s will. His lid rose two nail-widths. His tongue squeezed through after the glove, tasting worked leather, handled copper, and the stale salt of Tess’s fingers without finding living flesh.
"Lid," Holt said. "Tongue. Glove."
Tess snapped the cord back. Dane’s teeth closed on the glove’s departing warmth and caught only air.
The lid settled crookedly. Its left pin scraped the socket all the way down.
No one spoke during the reset. Tess’s cord rasped over stone. Brant’s breath came through his nose in counted pulls. Vera crossed no mark, but her pulse moved closer through Dane’s prey sense until her boots stopped outside the inner line.
The first miss had taught his body the glove’s lie. Leather carried old hand-salt, the buckle promised value, and neither offered a heartbeat. Vera did. The prey map thickened around her wrist with every step, until even the tongue wound angled toward it inside his closed mouth.
Leather tightened at the back of her belt when Brant took hold.
"Grip confirmed," Vera said. "Second swing."
The false hand returned.
Dane opened faster. The ownership tag burned against his side, driving command through rim, hinge, and tongue. The buckle entered his bite path. His teeth spread for the empty fingers.
Then Vera’s living heat reached the distance his body had learned.
The glove ceased to matter.
His tongue bent toward the pulse above her cuff. The lid twisted after it. Brant’s belt hand pulled; leather strained; Vera’s boots struck backward. The brass hook dropped into the lockplate notch, but Dane was already committed past it.
He drove pressure through the cut in his tongue. The pain gave him a route into the front rim. He forced that rim right while the opening command dragged the lid left.
The crooked hinge received both orders.
Its brass pin bit sideways into the socket. The band cinched. His wood tore beneath it in bundles. Strands dragged across the pin and snapped one by one. Cured resin split along the seam. The break peeled through Dane’s left side with a wet wooden crack that reached every tooth.
His tongue convulsed, widening the raw cut as the lid stopped for one breath. Vera had cleared the teeth; the false hand remained between them.
Brant rammed the hook down and held the broken lid in that single arrested beat.
"Release," Vera ordered.
Tess let the cord go.
Dane’s jaw completed the command after the delay. One tooth scored a shallow groove across the leather index finger and stopped short of the copper buckle. The intact cord fled over stone and came to rest within Tess’s reach.
The lid fell crooked.

The panel vanished.
Between hunger choosing and the lid obeying, Dane now owned a splinter of time too small to rest in. Whenever he pressed on it, the brass pin grated through torn wood again.
Holt’s slate scratched. "Redirect before the split. Tooth mark after it."
"Record those two points," Vera said. "Nothing about why."
Brant kept the intact hook seated over the lid while the others moved back. Vera’s boots cleared the outer arc first. Only when both heels had stopped beyond it did the strain leave her belt.
"No more motion tests," she said. "One contactless scan across the lockplate and damaged hinge. If the mouth advances, the scan ends. Then we withdraw."
"You said one pass," Brant said.
"This is the pass. The glove was the question that made it necessary."
Holt’s slate scratched again. Vera let it finish before she added, "Write one chosen cost. Make no claim beyond that."
The broken chalk tip still lay inside the bite line. Holt extended the blunt haft of his inspection pole from beyond the outer arc. Tess guided it by voice until the haft nudged the bitten glove into the strip between the two farther marks, its buckle still nested in the palm and its uncut cord running back to her. Holt withdrew the pole without touching Dane.
Beyond the marks, four sets of boots held while the hook stayed over Dane’s lid. Vera unwrapped her ward crystal, still without bringing it near.
Dane’s split hinge ground against the crooked pin before her spell ever touched him.
