The teeth closed before Dane could turn thought into action.
The lid caught the man’s right forearm halfway between wrist and elbow. One upper tooth punched through the rain-stiff sleeve and buried itself along the outside of the arm. A lower tooth entered from beneath. Their points met against bone.
The man’s scream struck Dane through the open lid. He tore backward, and the teeth ripped the holes wider instead of letting him go.
Stop. Open.
Dane drove both commands at the left hinge. They stopped at the hot iron around its pin while the lid kept descending.
The chipped pry bar dropped from the trapped hand. Its rag-wrapped handle hit stone first, then the filed point rang and skittered beyond the man’s reach.
Dane’s tongue unrolled after it.
Six coppers, a thin silver, and the square-holed coin clung to the wet muscle for half a turn before falling back into his mouth. The tongue looped around the trapped wrist and cinched. Blood crossed it hot enough to draw every hinge tight.
Relief followed through Dane’s boards. Against that sick ease came three dirty fingernails, raking his front as the man’s left hand slapped flat. A loose brass ring clicked from his thumb against the lower iron band.
"Let go!"
Dane threw his mind into the tongue. Loosen. Reverse. Give him his hand.
The coil tightened until the man’s knuckles ground against the inner rim.
His boots thrashed for purchase. An iron heel tack shrieked over stone. The body twisted left, but the caught forearm held straight across Dane’s teeth. Tendons shifted beneath the tongue. The lower tooth grated once along bone.
The man screamed again. The sound broke into coughing.
Pushing at the lid from inside himself, Dane found cold wood, two tooth roots, the rigid iron at his right corner, then nothing that would obey. While the bite deepened by the width of a nail, Nate’s left hand struck his side again and stayed there with the fingers spread.
"Please."
The same plea had entered the room before the lock turned. Dane had heard it and waited in the dark while his body prepared.
The ring struck iron under three dragging nails. His palm slipped in blood. Dane fixed on those contacts and sent the only answer he had.
I am trying.
The tongue answered with a hard pull. Both of the man’s knees hit stone. His trapped shoulder slammed Dane’s lower rim, and the side of his head struck the floor close enough that the impact shuddered through Dane’s base.
For two breaths, the left hand only twitched. When it moved again, it swept late and wide across the floor. Fingertips scraped stone an arm’s length short of the pry bar.
Blood from the bitten forearm ran into Dane’s mouth and thickened his tongue around the taste. Behind the first teeth, a second row rose and settled against the sleeve without piercing yet.
Dane felt how easily they could.
He forced attention back to the left hinge until the pin burned. No movement. No gap.
"Nate," the man breathed toward the empty doorway.
It took Dane a beat to understand. The man was naming himself for whoever came through that doorway next.
His pulse beat against Dane’s tongue, quick and uneven. The free hand groped upward again and caught the lower band. Paper crumpled inside his coat when his chest pressed the front board.
"Nate Parr. If someone finds..."
His breath failed before the sentence did.
Dane held the name. Nate Parr. A man who had limped into the room with a wound under his trouser bandage and a filed pry bar, then spent his failing breath on something he needed another person to find.
Nate planted his left boot. His right knee jammed against Dane’s lower front board. The free hand locked around the iron band, ring ticking once against it. Then he drove with his leg and hauled his trapped shoulder backward.
His own forearm became a lever between the teeth.
The lid rose a finger’s width. Blood-slick cloth shifted. Nate dragged his wrist half an inch toward freedom.
Dane hurled Open at the left hinge.
The hinge stayed rigid. Nate had made the gap. Nate was making the next one too.

Fluid welled from the grooves around Dane’s teeth.
Before either of them could move, it soaked Nate’s sleeve. Cloth darkened and curled into the bite holes while the flesh beneath clenched hard around the teeth. The spasm opened his left hand. His ring slipped from the thumb, struck the lower band, and fell outside the mouth to settle beside the rag-wrapped pry bar.
"No, no, no."
His knee slid down the front board.
Dane aimed his mind at the two inner teeth resting on the sleeve. Stay folded. Stay down.
Together they rose, one hooking the jacket under Nate’s right shoulder while its mate found the side of his chest and the tongue jerked his captured wrist deeper. Across the rim went the shoulder. Nate caught the front band with his left hand; the ruined right arm could no longer lever against the bite, and three nails tore wet lines through the grime on Dane’s board.
The mouth widened. Iron bands stretched with a low groan. Nate’s upper body folded over the rim while his knees remained on stone.
An inner tooth drove between the ribs on his right side.
Dane felt the rib resist, bend, and give. The tooth entered past it. Nate’s next breath left in a wet grunt against the wood. The breath after that rattled without filling him.
Dane pushed at the tooth root. Pain climbed the root into his lid, sharp enough to scatter thought. The tooth held. His tongue drew Nate another handspan inside.
The body’s satisfaction arrived before Nate stopped moving. Warmth spread from the buried tooth through Dane’s front board. His lid settled more easily. The smell of blood became direction, distance, and need.
Dane wanted to tear himself apart.
Nate’s left boot heel hammered the floor twice.
Then once.
Water struck stone behind Dane. Small claws shifted under the broken shelf. Nate’s pulse fluttered against the tongue and disappeared.
The lid remained closed around his shoulder and ribs. Dane kept pushing at the hinge until the pin felt white-hot, but the pressure came from thought alone. Nothing opened.
In the last clear memory of June’s hand, blue ink marked the thumb she held against his knuckle while he failed to answer. Against Dane’s iron now, Nate’s bare thumb rested as the hand went slack outside his lid. Warmth thickened through his boards.
Nate Parr, Dane repeated. Nate Parr.
The tongue pulled the rest of Nate over the rim. His knees knocked Dane’s front in passing. The boots dragged across stone, then lifted. Folded paper in his coat caught against Dane’s front lip; a damp corner stayed pinched outside when the coat seam tore around it. His left hand fell inside last.
Weight settled across Dane’s tongue and inner teeth, scattering the bait into new places. All six ordinary coppers rolled into separate hollows; the thin silver slid deep along his left side; the square-holed coin stayed near the back, its red string brushing the tongue when Nate’s coat shifted.
The body began to take him apart.
Heat entered through the wound between Nate’s ribs and spread beneath his clothes. Sleeve threads softened against Dane’s teeth. Blood thinned and vanished into grooves that had felt like solid wood a moment earlier. Each small loss reached Dane as nourishment: salt, iron, warmth, weight becoming less.
His boards drank. The ache in his hinges eased.
Dane pressed every thought he had against that relief. The body kept feeding.
Something hard clicked near his lockplate. Nate’s belt shifted under the tongue, and a small knife slipped from its sheath. The blade’s belly was blunt. A nick interrupted the tip, dried wax filled a shallow notch near the spine, and cord fibers clung beneath the handle wrap. Dane knew each flaw only where metal touched him.
A braided cord tightened, snapped, and drew a flat brass charm from beneath Nate’s collar.
The charm landed beside the knife. Dane traced it with the edge of his tongue: a small door stamped into one face, three raised lines falling toward its roof.
Rain over a roof.
The knife warmed. So did the charm.
Dane aimed for the narrow gap above his front rim. He ordered the whole tongue upward. Nothing happened.
He stopped trying to move the whole thing.
One copper rested against a tender point beneath the tongue’s right edge. Dane held his attention there, on one coin and one patch of muscle. Lift.
The patch jumped.
The copper rolled over Nate’s still hand and struck the knife.
The movement belonged to Dane. It had come after Nate’s last pulse, after the only moment when it could have mattered.
Blue text filled the dark.

The system called it a kill. A strip of Nate’s sleeve still hung from Dane’s front teeth.
Choice: Convert?
The knife’s nicked spine and the charm’s little roof pressed into his tongue while Nate softened around them.
