The hard wheel crossed the next stone joint.
Its vibration reached Dane through the annex floor, followed by a second dry rim and the weight of a loaded cart. Neither wheel rang like iron or flexed like wood. Small hard pieces shifted above the axle, checked by thread that whispered across a lid. Grib’s quicker steps kept to the cart’s left. His hammer head struck the frame whenever he shortened his stride.
The cart stopped beyond Vera’s fading chalk. Bone pieces clicked inside a lidded box.
"Cosmetic fault," Grib said before anyone asked. "Damp grain, old varnish, ordinary route wear. I cured that hinge myself; the resin and both tag nails hold. Anything after that belongs to the wall."
Kett’s toe bones touched stone in a dry sequence of taps. "Surface mood is not a category."
"Write damp."
A stylus scratched across a narrow slate.
"Water tracks downward," Kett said. "This line faces the delver approach. Voluntary strain remains in the ownership nail beneath your repair."
Grib’s hammer stopped knocking the cart.
Through the warp left by Dane’s first Cracked Chest attempt, cooler air reached living grain along an exposed resin edge. Each loaded fiber led back to Grib’s crooked pin and the nail Kett had named. Iron bands dragged the lid toward square while the left property nail demanded obedience. Dane denied both enough pressure to erase the fault.
Inside, two coppers pinned Toma’s blood-stiff glove over the uncontrolled ring. One kept Nate’s return charm apart from the knife. Two waited free. Saint Rust moved his vessel farther from the brass token.
"Legal hands brought wheels," the blade murmured.
Kett set the box on stone. Black thread rasped over its lid, then tightened as two narrow picks lifted something soft between them.
"Local tag contact," he said. "Archive comparison. No extraction authority."
Grib’s claws clicked once against the hammer handle. "Then the mouth stays closed. I brought no tray."
Kett lowered the picks instead.
The picks touched Dane’s brass tag. Wax followed, cool and tacky, smelling of old tallow and chalk dust. It gripped the ownership strip without running. Kett spread the picks, and the substance pulled from both sides at once.
Cold drove through the left nail.
Cold crushed the warmed grain around the point and spread through the side board, pulling the surviving warp toward flat. Both bands tightened; his lockplate torqued; the lid rose until his teeth touched. Every counterpressure returned through the wax as an archive signal. Against it, Dane loaded the crooked hinge and held the opening short of a gap.

Thread pulled taut across the box. Kett separated three tabs; their dry edges knocked together above Dane’s tag.
The first tapped the brass.
"Donation coffer," Kett read. "Floor Four shrine route. Rejected a child’s coin after the shrine found the petitioner eligible. Staff recorded correction."
The wax carried the word *coin* through Dane’s ownership route. Five ordinary coppers warmed in the front gutter. Hunger leaned toward them, insisting that a coffer refusing money and a mimic preserving it were the same mistake. Dane kept the two free coppers still and the glove pinned.
"Bent offering," Grib said. "Shrine boxes jam."
Kett’s stylus scratched once. "The next adult donation was accepted."
The tab struck the box. Black thread tightened around its edge while Kett lifted the second.
The second tab dragged over the box edge.
"Wardrobe lure. Guest chamber route. Delayed closure until a marked servant crossed the threshold. Staff recorded reassignment."
"A servant can pull a door crooked."
Kett continued over him. "The next guest received normal closure."
Closure pressure ran from the wax into Dane’s lid band. His right hinge tried to settle first; the crooked left pin lagged, copying the exact asymmetry the Archive had come to investigate. Dane held the gap closed without smoothing the delver-facing warp.
Grib shifted. His hammer scraped a short line in the floor and came to rest.
The third tab made a thinner sound. One corner caught against a pick before Kett freed it.
"Travel coffin. Merchant burial wing. Refused its assigned corpse. Staff sealed the record."
The word *corpse* reached Dane’s predatory frame.
His tongue thickened. Hunger heated scarf fibers, blood-stiff leather, and the brass circle beneath the glove. Deeper inside, the thin silver and square-holed red-string coin pressed against wood beyond his control. Nate’s charm and Saint Rust’s knife offered separate metal weights. The blade stayed against the inner wall. Saint Rust supplied no theory and no comfort.
Grib waited long enough for Dane to hear a claw joint creak around the hammer.
"What happened after sealing?"
"The accessible record ends there."
The cart, the annex, and both voices stayed quiet.
Other storage frames had chosen around the use assigned to them. Dane kept the warped lid from flattening and held the glove cover against the wax’s pull. Hope hurt through the same nail Brackenvault used to preserve the proof. Three missing endings made that hope dangerous enough to keep private.
Grib broke the silence. "How many?"
"Enough to have a category."
Cold held through Dane’s side while the tabs rested above his tag.
"Then seal it again," Grib said. The officious breadth had left his voice. "Whatever ended those entries belongs in the Archive."
"The error was treating sealed as absent."
Three tab edges clicked into line. Black thread tightened around them, and Kett’s stylus returned to the slate.
Grib’s hammer shifted against stone. "A coffer takes coins. A wardrobe takes clothes. A coffin takes corpses. This one eats living people."
"Target selection remains inside the predation frame."
Bone stylus strokes sounded across the slate, deliberate and widely spaced.
"Responsive Storage Asset," Kett said. "Mimic subtype. Active predation frame. Mercy-biased presentation irregularity."
The new words arrived as pressure rather than praise, tightening wax around Dane’s nail. An accurate category gave the Core a narrower grip.
The hammer head touched stone with a dull knock and stayed there.
Black wax tightened over Dane’s tag and searched inward.
Cold branched through the records his ownership nails had kept. It found the scarf first, then the blood-stiff glove and the five ordinary coppers. Each retained object pulled from a different point in his mouth, giving the search a shape he refused to surrender. It passed deeper across the thin silver and the square-holed coin’s red string. Nate’s return charm answered with dense brass heat.
Saint Rust drew his own knife vessel along Dane’s inner wall before the search reached it.
The glove contracted. Its covered ring knocked once against the gutter. The contact sharpened hunger until Dane’s tongue lifted toward the leather. He forced the muscle back down before the hot fold could take both glove and ring.
Dane pressed the two established coppers into the leather edges. He touched no brass. The other three coppers stayed where they were, one between charm and knife and two free, while the wax pulled at all of them through the tag.
Kett’s slate clicked.
"Multiple retained materials. Personal-item trace. Contents unresolved."
Grib’s hammer lifted from the floor; the handle creaked inside his grip. "Unconverted value falls under quartermaster review."
"After catalog and claimant review," Kett said. "Your catalog privilege is conditional. Nate Parr’s kill credit was moved into your maintenance entry."
The hammer came down too hard and chipped the flagstone beside Grib’s boot.
"I can work under witness," he said.
"You will."
The picks folded the wax across Dane’s tag. Its edges met, fused, and shortened the distance between both ownership nails.

Pressure descended through the seal.
Core pressure drove Dane’s lid into a half-finger display gap. His teeth separated, and hunger thrust his tongue toward the blood-stiff glove. Cold from the seal held the right hinge open while the left pin ground against its resin bed.
He drove coarse force through the crooked left pin. The exposed resin edge ground against living fibers; the lid tilted, caught, and settled again. One tooth clipped another before the mouth closed. Pain stayed in the hinge, nail, and lockplate, with no new route or gain. The warped fault remained.
Kett returned the three tabs to the box. Thread tightened, a lid closed, and the loaded cart shifted back onto its bone rims.
"Inventory Clarification remains local and witnessed," he said. "Bring tools sized for a mouth. Record every contact."
Grib’s claw rasped once along the hammer handle. "I will fetch the correct equipment."
A shove moved the cart. One wheel crossed the same joint that had announced it, then the other; box weight shifted over the axle and tabs clicked behind tightened thread. The dry rims and Kett’s hard steps receded toward the Bone Archive stair.
Saint Rust pressed his knife flat against Dane’s inner wall. "Watch the hand with the hammer."
Grib stayed for three breaths.
His hammer head dragged off the chipped stone. Then faster steps followed the cart, and the hammer no longer struck its frame.
The black seal kept biting after the annex went quiet.
