"The room was quiet," Toma said.
Clean cloth tore beside him. Candle wax and wet wool settled near the threshold while a shield rim ground into the stone between Dane and the gathering boots.
"Brant, hold that angle," Vera said. "Holt, his left hand. Wrap the fingers separately. Tess, time and entry order."
Toma’s hooked knife tapped the floor on Dane’s right.
"Keep it there," Vera said.
The metal stayed down.
Holt took Toma’s injured hand. Cloth whispered around the first finger, stopped for a pulse check, then circled the second. "Bend this one. Slowly. Stop. Now the other."
Toma’s breath caught twice.
"Both joints answer," Holt said. "The punctures missed the hinge of them. Hold still if you want that to remain true."
Vera let him finish before answering Toma. "So is a grave. People still check before climbing in."
Holt pulled the first wrap snug. Toma swore, and a pencil started scratching behind the shield.
"I investigated an opportunity," Toma said. "Put that instead of private share."
"Your badge was turned inward, and you called nobody," Tess said. The pencil kept moving. "I’m putting `private share.`"
Toma lowered his voice. "The private part could stay off the report."
"You left the private part in the monster. Keep it, Tess."
Inside Dane, the left glove sagged between two inner ridges with scarf wool trapped beneath one tooth. Blood had soaked the torn leather. An uneven weight pressed inside its palm, but leather and flesh-smell were all he could separate.
Five ordinary coppers rested shallow near the rim. Deeper lay the thin silver, the square-holed coin tied with red string, Nate Parr’s nicked knife, and Nate’s rain-over-roof return charm. Toma’s blood was the only converted matter inside him.
With the bubble flattened and the loose snag sealed, the cured hinge offered no help. Two crossing cuts still divided Dane’s tongue into pain he could reach, though the shallower arm had begun to soften at its edge.
Something scraped behind the broken shelf. Buk’s spoon touched stone and went still.
A leather loop creaked near Vera’s wrist. "Small life sign at the shelf. Bleeding. Low to the floor."
Buk’s spoon grated once toward the east crack.
Brant’s shield shifted a finger across the threshold. "Goblin runner?"
"Likely. The east crack is open behind it."
Tess’s pencil made one more stroke. "Does the runner go in the route total?"
No one answered her.
"Keep the shield on the mouth," Vera said. "Holt finishes the hand. The runner gets the east crack."
"It may bring a patrol," Brant said.
"Later. The open mimic is here."
Holt tightened the second wrap.
Toma jerked and cursed. Three drops struck stone in quick, separate taps.
Heat reached Dane through the floor. The smell of fresh blood hit his tongue, and the mimic body gathered itself before he chose anything.
His tongue surged toward the rim.
Dane pressed through the hotter arm of the crossing wound. Half a beat disappeared. The tongue clamped around Toma’s retained glove instead of clearing the teeth. Leather groaned; the scarf scrap tore another inch. The three fresh drops remained on the floor, close enough to taste and beyond his mouth.
Buk moved during Toma’s shout. Spoon, dragging foot, then a shoulder scraping stone: the sounds crossed behind the shelf toward the east crack.
"Buk was never here," the goblin whispered between breaths.
The final scrape narrowed beyond the east cut and vanished.
"Let him go," Vera said. "Nobody turns a back on the chest."
Brant’s shield edge scraped away from the east angle and settled harder across Dane’s approach, leaving the crack clear. Buk’s dragging step faded beyond hearing.
Warmth collected inside Dane’s mouth.

The blood already smeared into Dane converted without waiting for him. Strength spread through his tongue with Toma’s salt and fear. The shallow arm of the first cut drew shut, closing one route through the muscle while the deeper crossing edge continued to burn.
The body flexed around its stolen meal. Dane’s remaining pain handle felt thinner.
Three fresh drops still warmed the stone beyond his teeth. Their scent tugged at the newly strengthened tongue while the closing cut gave Dane less pain to push through. When he pressed the remaining edge, pressure reached the root too quickly. The half beat had already begun to shrink.
The glove and scarf stayed solid. So did every coin, Nate’s knife, and the return charm. The uneven weight remained hidden inside the glove.
"The tongue pressure changed," Vera said.
Brant shifted the spear haft against his shield. "If it reaches past the rim again, I strike. Healing makes the next reach worse."
"Toma," Vera said, "tell me what happened from the first forearm contact. Only what you felt."
He breathed until he could answer without a tremor. "It swept along my left arm. I cut it twice. The loop started closing, then slid down to the glove and two fingers. It went slack long enough for me to twist out."
The pencil stopped.
"After he crossed the bite line, it struck its own board," Tess said. "We heard that from the corridor."
Holt touched the bandages one at a time. Toma pulled breath through his teeth at each. "No wrist crush. Two punctured fingers, both warm, both moving. Whatever changed the pull left him those facts."
"The same injury could have spoiled the pull twice," Vera said. "Or the chest could have used it. I won’t choose between those from one hand."
Brant planted the shield harder. "Then classify it from here or let me break it."
The shield rim bit into the grout and narrowed the approach.
Tess’s pencil resumed. "If it can interfere with feeding, a collector will ask what that costs."
"A hand is bleeding beside you," Holt said. "Price it later."
The pencil stopped again.
Vera set chalk to stone. Its dry scrape began at the doorframe, crossed the main approach, and ended in the drain groove. She left the east crack outside the boundary.
"Holt, take Toma behind Brant. Tess, left wall. Nobody crosses this line."
Boots changed places. Cloth, shield, and spear withdrew beyond the bite arc. Toma’s right-hand hook scraped with him and stayed outside Dane’s reach.
Brant planted the shield. "If the lid rises, I hit it."
His boots took another inch of the threshold and stopped.
"Strike if the lid rises," Vera said. "My contact stays on the lockplate through the chalk. Nothing enters the room."
"You are the mage witness."
"I arrived after the bite. I know less than Brackenvault wants me to think."
The wand tip tapped the line.
Too fine to be weight, mana entered the stone and traveled along the chalk boundary to Dane’s lockplate. The lid and tag stayed slack while the contact pressed once, waited for the plate’s return, and followed only the heat that answered.
Dane held still.
The pressure touched the cured resin route and divided around it. One trace tested the tag’s warmth. Another passed across the lockplate and found the different densities held inside him: coin, leather, scarf, old iron, brass.
At Nate’s return charm, the spell paused.
The rain-over-roof token burned beneath Dane’s tongue. Brackenvault opened the old choice.
Choice: Convert?
Dane refused.
Pain struck from the charm into his tongue. The cured resin carried it through the rim and hinge without losing any of it. Teeth ground against the glove. Conversion heat tightened around leather and scarf, but both stayed whole. Nate’s knife knocked once against a copper. The return charm stayed hard.
Untouched by command pressure, the lid kept the same open angle.
Her wand loop snapped taut with a leather slap. Chalk grated beneath a sudden shift of weight, and the mana pressure stopped advancing.
"Something inside held one item against conversion," Vera said. Her breath came faster now. "The heat rose. The lid never answered me."

The private words gave Dane nothing he could explain: interference without identity, a withheld name, and Nate’s promise still hard beneath his tongue.
"Vera?" Holt asked.
"Everyone back from the chalk," she said. "Holt, move Toma. Brant goes before me. Tess, keep the release, the stopped pursuit, and the preserved item as separate entries. Do not make one explain the others."
The mana pressure withdrew from Dane’s lockplate, receded along the stone, and left only the chalk boundary across the threshold. No warmth or tug remained between wand and tag.
Boots moved down the corridor in shielded order. Vera waited until Holt, Toma, Tess, and Brant had cleared the line before her steps followed.
"We file it as responsive and dangerous," she said. "Nobody opens it again without sealed retrieval."
Toma’s abandoned glove settled against Dane’s fading tongue cut. The uneven weight inside shifted once, then went still.
