Alex and Zara had just finished dinner together, a simple yet delicious meal of roasted herb chicken, buttery mashed potatoes, and warm bread.
Now as usual they found themselves in Alex’s room surrounded by the quiet embrace of the night.
Alex sat on the edge of his bed while Zara occupied the couch beside it, the silver moonlight spilling through the window and painting soft patterns across the room.
Unlike every other night, Alex wasn’t preparing to sleep.
Instead, he sat perfectly still, elbows resting on his knees, fingers loosely interlocked beneath his chin.
His brows were knitted tightly together, his black eyes narrowed with intense concentration as countless possibilities rose and fell within his mind.
Every now and then, his fingers tapped unconsciously against one another, only for him to stop himself moments later, clearly dissatisfied with whatever conclusion he had reached.
It was the expression of someone trying to solve a puzzle whose answer was frustratingly close.
"What are you thinking so hard about, Alex?" Zara asked curiously.
"You’re usually asleep by this hour so you can wake up early in the morning, aren’t you?"
His train of thought came to an abrupt halt, almost like a switch had been flipped, Alex slowly turned toward her and an irritated frown immediately appeared on his face.
"I haven’t been able to find the damn final push." He let out an annoyed sigh.
"What do I have to do?"
He ran a hand through his hair in frustration.
"I’ve tried almost everything I can think of, but the Shadow Element and the bond..." He shook his head.
"They’re like standing at the edge of a cliff,"
"I can feel the next phase right in front of me, but I just can’t reach it."
His normally calm voice carried an unmistakable trace of dejection.
"Now, now..."
A small smile curved onto Zara’s lips as she turned completely toward him as she rested her left elbow upon her lap while her left hand supported the elbow of her opposite arm.
Her right hand rose gracefully beneath her chin, her thumb and index finger forming a thoughtful V-shape against her face as she studied him with amused eyes.
"Are you already giving up at the very first hurdle of your growth?" she teased.
"I’m not giving up," Alex muttered.
"I’m trying to think of something I overlooked,"
"Something obvious that I simply haven’t tried yet..."
He glanced toward Zara, then paused.
’Wait a second...’
A single thought sparked, then anothe, one idea connected to the next until his mind began racing faster than ever before.
"...Well, my little prodigy, if you think..."
Zara suddenly stopped speaking as a strange chill ran down her spine.
Shiver.
Shiver.
Shiver.
Her instincts screamed, she slowly looked at Alex and he was staring directly at her, not absentmindedly or curiously.
His sharp black eyes had locked onto her with the focused intensity of a predator that had finally discovered the missing piece of an impossible puzzle.
"What are you..." Zara muttered warily.
She did not have a good feeling about this, whatever he had just thought of, it couldn’t possibly be normal, but Alex didn’t answer her this time, instead, his gaze shifted toward the final line of his status screen.

’Shadow Element...’
’What better place to awaken it than from the source itself?!’
A faint smile slowly spread across Alex’s face, and the look in his eyes became almost frightening as every piece of the plan clicked perfectly into place.
"Come here."
He looked directly at Zara.
"And lie down on the bed."
For perhaps the first time since they had met, Alex’s voice carried unmistakable authority.
It wasn’t loud or harsh, but it left absolutely no room for refusal.
Zara blinked.
"...What did you say?"
"Come here."
He repeated calmly.
"And lie down on the bed."
Still wearing a suspicious expression, Zara slowly stood before walking toward him.
She sat down on the mattress first before carefully lying back, never once taking her eyes off him.
"You do realize how this looks, right?" she asked.
The room suddenly felt much smaller.
-> A young man and his Shadow Guard.
-> Alone.
-> Late at night.
-> Sharing the same bed!!
Alex simply looked at her.
"Let me make it look even more suspicious," he muttered.
Before Zara could process those words, he climbed on her stomach and leaned over her.
His hands settled on either side of her head above the long strands of silky black hair that had spread across the pillow like flowing midnight.
Framed beneath him, Zara’s beautiful face was illuminated by gentle moonlight filtering through the window.
Her clear black eyes widened in surprise, while a few loose strands of dark hair rested softly against her cheeks.
The rise and fall of her breathing caused subtle movements beneath the fabric of her clothes as she stared at him in complete confusion.
"Alex... what are you..."
Panic slowly crept into her voice.
’Why is he this close?!’
’What is he planning?!’
Without answering, Alex leaned closer until his lips hovered beside her left ear and a soft breath escaped him, Zara’s body reacted instinctively and goosebumps spread across her skin.
"Gasp..."
"Close your eyes," Alex whispered quietly.
"And feel everything."
Trusting him despite her racing heart, Zara slowly closed her eyes.
Alex carefully lowered himself until their bodies rested comfortably against one another, allowing the Shadow Bond connecting them to resonate as naturally as possible.
He gently wrapped his arms around her before resting the side of his face against the curve of her neck, not forcefully or possessively, simply close enough for the bond between them to become the center of both their attention.
Their hearts thundered inside their chests, and through the Shadow Bond, each could hear the other’s heartbeat with perfect clarity.
Alex closed his eyes and his Adaptation activated, every ounce of his concentration focused entirely on the Shadow Bond, a faint ripple spread through the invisible connection.
He reached out and Zara instinctively answered making the bond come alive.
Alex sent calm.
Zara returned warmth.
Alex sent reassurance.
Zara answered with quiet happiness.
Alex shared trust.
Zara returned unwavering loyalty.
Alex offered gratitude.
Zara answered with gentle affection.
Alex conveyed determination.
Zara responded with encouragement.
Alex sent playful confidence.
Zara replied with soft amusement.
Again.
And again.
Feelings.
Emotions.
None of them needed words.
The silent conversation flowed naturally through the bond, each response strengthening the connection little by little and without even realizing it, both of their racing heartbeats gradually slowed.
Their breathing synchronized and the tension faded, a peaceful silence settled over the room, almost unconsciously, Zara’s arms slowly wrapped around Alex’s back, not because he had asked, not because she was thinking, simply because it felt... right.
Minutes quietly slipped away and for the first time in nearly a decade... Zara, his faithful Shadow Guard, finally drifted into a deep and peaceful sleep, her expression, usually composed and vigilant, became completely relaxed, gentle, vulnerable and free of burdens.
Alex remained still beside her, continuing to guide the Adaptation as their synchronized heartbeats echoed quietly through the room.
Moonlight poured through the window, draping the pair in silver, the young man with raven-black hair and equally dark eyes rested peacefully against the beautiful guardian who had watched over him for so many years.
Neither spoke, neither moved, only the quiet rhythm of two perfectly synchronized hearts filled the silent room and from a distance, they looked almost like two shadows embracing beneath the moon, inseparable even in sleep.
And for just this one peaceful night...
The world outside ceased to matter.
