They thanked her, and as Alex turned to leave, Vespera caught him one more time, pulling him into another hug, shorter this time, but no less genuine, before letting him go.
"Come back," she said, her hand lingering briefly against his shoulder.
"Even with everything piled onto my desk right now, thanks to a certain someone’s very public early awakening, I am always going to be free for my children. Always. I mean that."
"I’ll visit whenever I can," Alex said, and meant it.
He left with Zara falling into step beside him, the heavy double doors closing softly behind them, and as they made their way back down the long corridor, Alex reached inward and pulled up the interface that had been sitting untouched in the back of his mind since the morning had derailed it.

He’d meant to stop there, the way he usually did, cataloguing the numbers and moving on to whatever came next. But something made him linger this time, his attention drifting sideways to the two entries he’d only skimmed once, back in the dark of a void he still didn’t fully understand, before the exhaustion of that first night had swallowed him whole. He reached for them properly now.
[ Bloodline : Evolvari ]
[ EVOLVARI ]
[ The Evolvari are not born. They are arrived at.
Every species that has ever walked, crawled, swum, or burned its way across the face of existence began somewhere simpler. The distance between that origin and what they became is called evolution. The Evolvari Bloodline is that distance, distilled, not the destination, but the process itself, made flesh and made inheritable.
A bearer of the Evolvari Bloodline does not have a fixed ceiling.
They have a direction.
The body of an Evolvari does not break under pressure, it learns from it. It does not fail against foreign energies, it incorporates them. It does not plateau, it reassesses. Every damage taken becomes data. Every threshold crossed becomes a new floor. Every environment that should be hostile becomes, over sufficient exposure, home.
The Evolvari bloodline has no record of a maximum expression because no bearer has ever reached one.
What is known: an Evolvari in the early stages of awakening will survive things that should kill them. An Evolvari in the middle stages will adapt to things that should be impossible. An Evolvari at full expression is not a category that existing classification systems adequately address.
The bloodline does not activate on command. It activates on necessity, when the bearer is pushed to a limit and the limit is found to be a suggestion rather than a wall.
You cannot rush it.
You can, however, keep walking toward things that require it. ]
[ Aspect : Adaptation ]
[ ADAPTATION ]
[ Adaptation is not a skill.
It is not a technique, not a process, not a method you execute and complete and move past.
It is a phenomenon, one of the fundamental mechanics by which existence reshapes itself in response to itself. You did not acquire it. You were recognised by it.
The mechanics are as follows: sufficient exposure to any phenomenon, at a sufficient intensity, sustained across sufficient intervals and conditions, creates the possibility of adaptation. Not the guarantee, the possibility. The bearer must survive the exposure. The bearer must process it. And then the bloodline, which is the Evolvari’s answer to everything it has ever encountered, will attempt to incorporate what it has learned.
There is no element you cannot eventually adapt to.
There is no energy you cannot eventually incorporate.
There is no environment, no force, no power that exists in this world or beyond it that is categorically beyond your reach, only thresholds you have not yet been pushed to.
In combat, this means the following: the first time an enemy strikes you, you are learning. The second time, you are adjusting. The third time, you are already somewhere they did not expect you to be.
You will never fight the same fight twice.
You will never lose the same way twice.
Because you will adapt. You will win. You will evolve to fight harder things.
And then you will adapt to those.
And then you will evolve again.
There is no version of this process that ends. There is only the next threshold, and the bearer walking toward it, and the bloodline already preparing for what comes after. ]
Alex read through both entries slowly, the way he always did, and felt the same cold, quiet weight settle over him that had settled the first time, in the dark, before he’d even fully understood what he was looking at.
’It’s still exactly as unsettling the second time,’ he thought, his eyes catching on the same lines that had caught him before. ’No record of a maximum expression because no bearer has ever reached one. You will never fight the same fight twice. You will never lose the same way twice.’
’This isn’t a class. Mother’s right about that. A class is like a box someone else built and handed to you. This is a road with no marked end, and the only thing anyone’s ever confirmed about it is that walking it far enough turns you into something the rest of the world doesn’t have a shelf to put you on.’
’And the part that actually gets under my skin is the necessity clause. It doesn’t activate on command. It activates when a limit turns out to be a suggestion instead of a wall. Which means every single time I’ve felt this thing stir, the mana overload, the spar with Scott, even that ridiculous half second glare I gave Zara this morning, some part of me was already standing at a wall I hadn’t consciously noticed yet, and it was already deciding whether that wall was real.’
He continued scrolling, and the next entry waited for him, patient as ever.
[ Aspect Rank : 1 (Awaken) ]
[ AWAKEN ]
[ At Rank 1, the Adaptation Aspect has completed its initial synchronisation with the bearer’s physical form. The primary marker of this rank is the formation of the Mana Heart.
The Mana Heart is not a Mana Core.
A Mana Core is a vessel, a container built in the standard location, accumulating mana the way a reservoir accumulates water. Functional. Common. A beginning that most practitioners treat as an endpoint.
The Mana Heart is something else.
It is a living accumulation point, seated in the organ that has governed the body’s rhythm since before birth, integrated with the bloodline’s adaptive architecture, capable of growth that a standard core structurally cannot achieve. Where a Mana Core stores, the Mana Heart processes. Where a Mana Core fills, the Mana Heart learns.
At Rank 1, the bearer may use mana to activate the Adaptation Aspect at its most basic expression. Exposure to elements. Initial contact with phenomena. The first steps of a journey that has no documented final destination.
This is the beginner rank.
Act accordingly. ]
’Act accordingly,’ he repeated internally, and there was something dry and almost fond in the thought, the way you’d address a stern instructor who’d never once softened their tone in your favor. ’Fine. I’ll act accordingly. I’ve been acting accordingly since the day I woke up screaming in a body I didn’t ask for. I don’t plan on stopping now just because the instructions got slightly more literal about it.’
He looked at the small decimals trailing after each number, five separate increases, one for every attribute, sitting there as quiet, undeniable proof that yesterday had actually meant something beyond the exhaustion.
’There it is,’ he thought, something warm and satisfied settling in his chest at the sight of it. ’Every single attribute nudged up in one day. Not dramatic. Not the kind of thing that changes a fight on its own. But it’s real, and it’s mine, and it happened because I put my body through ten different kinds of misery and refused to stop halfway through any of them.’
His eyes lingered on Mana Absorption, the skill sitting there in its quiet, understated line, still the single most absurd thing about his entire interface as far as he was concerned.
A skill that let him pull ambient mana directly into his own core, slowly, carefully, without needing years of mastery first. It wasn’t fast.
It wasn’t much, not yet.
But he could feel, somewhere underneath the practical use of it, a strange kind of excitement about what it might become if he simply kept doing it, day after day, patiently, the way he’d learned to do everything in this new life.
’And now,’ he thought, ’the bond.’
He turned the idea over as they walked, working through it with the same methodical care he applied to everything.
’Mother said the bond deepens as we sense it more consciously. Which means the actual bottleneck isn’t the bond itself, it’s my ability to feel it clearly and quickly. And if there’s one thing my Aspect seems built for, it’s exactly that. Adaptation doesn’t care what the phenomenon is. Elements, energy, environments, anything, given sufficient exposure. There’s no reason sensing the bond itself couldn’t count as exactly that kind of exposure.’
"You’re checking your status window," Zara said, watching his expression with the particular attentiveness she reserved for moments when he’d gone quiet in the specific way that meant something was actually happening behind his eyes.
"I am," Alex said.
"And I’m thinking about using my Aspect to help me grasp the bond faster. Actively, on purpose, instead of just letting it develop passively the way we have been."
Zara’s eyebrows lifted. "Is that even possible? Using an Aspect on something like a shadow bond, not just on combat or elements?"
"According to the Aspect’s own description, everything’s possible," Alex said, and there was something quietly thrilling underneath the flatness of the statement, the same thrill he’d felt every time the interface had shown him something no one else in this world had ever had a reason to see.
"It’s still only Rank 1, though. Awaken. So it might take a while before it actually shows results, the same way everything else has taken a while so far."
He looked ahead down the long corridor, already turning the next several days over in his mind, already mapping the shape of what came next the way he’d mapped everything since the moment he’d first opened his eyes in this world.
"We’ll see what happens," he said.
Beside him, the warmth of his Aspect stirred faintly at the edge of his perception, patient, familiar, and, if he was reading it correctly, more than a little curious about what he was about to ask of it next.
