Alex drove his fist straight into the dead center of the trunk.
BANG-BOOM-SHATTER!
The impact exploded through the clearing in a single heavy wave of sound.
Wood burst outward in sharp splinters and flying debris.
A dense cloud of bark fragments and pale inner fibers sprayed across the leaf litter.
'Holy—!'
The one meter thick trunk did not simply crack.
It failed completely around the point of contact, the dense old wood shearing apart under a force it had never been built to absorb.
Deep fissures raced upward and downward from the impact site in jagged lines.
The entire upper mass of the tree shifted, groaned, and began toppling toward him in a slow, inevitable arc of splintered timber and shaking branches.
'Oh No! Not On Me—!'
Alex tried to move out of the way smoothly.
The new power answered far too eagerly.
He pushed off the ground with what he thought was a controlled step.
The mantle's boost turned the motion into a violent surge.
'Too much!'
His body shot sideways with far more force than he intended, feet leaving the soft earth completely.
The world tilted hard.
'Shit—!'
He hit the ground on his side, skidding through leaves and dirt before coming to a stop several meters from where he had started.
"Aah..."
The impact knocked the breath out of him for a full second.
Splinters continued to rain down around the base of the falling tree.
The trunk crashed into the forest floor with a second, deeper boom that rolled outward through the woods and sent a visible shiver through the nearby undergrowth.
Alex lay flat on the ground for a moment, staring up at the canopy through the settling dust and the drifting fragments of bark.
'...I overdid it...completely overdid it...'
Zara walked over without hurry.
She looked down at him, one hand covering her mouth as a soft giggle escaped.
The amusement rolled across the open bond clear and bright, the same unrestrained warmth she had shown when her shadow stuck its tongue out at him earlier that morning.
She crouched beside him and reached out, patting the top of his head twice with light, deliberate motions, the way someone might reassure a child who had just discovered that running too fast ends in scraped knees and bruised pride.
"That was an impressive display of your newly gained power," she said, still smiling.
"The tree did not stand a chance, one clean hit and the whole trunk failed, but you need to learn how to control the boost properly before you attempt anything like that again."
"The mantle multiplies what you put into a movement, and if you treat it like your normal strength, you will keep launching yourself into the ground or through walls."
"Power without control is just a faster way to get hurt, and I would rather not have to explain to your mother why her son came home looking like he lost a fight with a forest."
"Ya, ya..."
Alex pushed himself up into a sitting position, then stood.
He dusted off his clothes with both hands, brushing leaves and dirt from his sleeves and the front of his shirt.
"Tch..."
Small splinters still clung to the fabric near his shoulder and along one side.
He flicked them away one by one while the last echoes of the falling tree faded into the deeper woods.
"Well Zara, you are right about that," he said.
"Power is useless without control, and I felt the difference the moment I pushed off."
"The boost answered harder than I expected and I had no practice metering it."
"The step that should have carried me clear turned into a full launch, that will not happen a second time, because I will treat the strength like a separate tool until the body learns the new limits."
He noticed the connection to his shadow mantle had already broken out of his control from the fall.
'Though so...'
The dual awareness that had sat so clearly in his body and the dark outline under his feet was gone.
The cold, the emptiness, and the silence that had locked into place during the merger were receding in a steady retreat.
The massive attribute boost faded with them, draining out of his limbs and core like water leaving a cracked vessel.
Strength returned to its ordinary level.
Speed dulled back to the familiar baseline.
Vitality settled into the range he had lived with for years.
What remained was a strange, slightly alien emptiness, as if someone had suddenly stripped the extra strength from his body and left the spaces it had occupied hollow for a few breaths longer than they should have been.
"I feel week..." He muttered to himself.
The sensation was uncomfortable in a quiet way.
Not painful, just wrong.
Like putting on clothes that no longer fit after wearing something perfectly tailored.
Adaptation recorded the exact quality of the loss, filing the difference between the boosted state and the ordinary one for later comparison.
Zara watched the change settle across his expression and posture.
Through the bond she would have felt the exact moment the mantle released and the boost collapsed.
She did not comment on the failure of the connection or the abrupt end of the union.
She only nodded once, the instructional calm returning to her face as the last of the earlier giggle faded.
"You will get used to the sensation with practice," she said.
"The first few times the power leaves, it feels like something important was taken away, that feeling fades once your body learns the difference between the boosted state and the normal one."
"Keep repeating the full process for the rest of the day, gather the element near the Mana Heart, form the external connection at the soles, climb the mantle section by section, densifying every layer before you move higher."
"Then merge it and hold the union long enough for Adaptation to record the stable boosted state."
"Then release cleanly and start over."
"Do it until your control improves and the efficiency of the climb stops wasting so much focus on corrections."
"Because the more clean cycles you complete, the faster the lag disappears and the smoother the densification becomes."
Alex brushed the last of the dirt from his palms and nodded.
"Yes, I agree, there is no point stopping after one success and one embarrassing fall, I guess I will keep cycling it until the control feels natural instead of forced."
"The data from the first full merger is still fresh and adaptation will refine the process faster if I feed it more attempts while the pathways are still responsive."
He turned his attention inward at once.
The Mana Heart still held a solid reserve.
The pathways that had carried the Shadow Element upward and downward all morning remained open and responsive.
Adaptation sat ready, already sorting the massive data load from the completed merger, the abrupt release, and the uncontrolled movement that had put him on the ground.
Alex gathered the cold, the emptiness, and the silence near the core the same way he had at the beginning of the first successful attempt.
The three sensations answered more readily this time.
The morning's work had left clear traces in the pathways.
He stabilized the filament, sent it down to the soles, and began reforming the external connection without waiting for further instruction.
This was how Alexander Abyss learned his second fundamental application of the Shadow Element.
Dark vision had been the first.
The ability to settle the element behind his eyes and turn complete darkness into usable sight.
The Shadow Mantle was the second.
The full union of body and shadow that raised attributes through raw elemental enhancement rather than mana or skill.
Once he had solid practice with both applications, his next goal would be clear and immediate.
Defeat the strongest recruit in the training hall.
Then begin his proper leveling plan with the breathing room and the reputation that victory would create.
The forest clearing around him still held the wreckage of the toppled tree and the scattered debris of the impact.
Zara stood a few steps away, watching with the quiet patience of someone who had already decided he would keep going until the technique stopped fighting him.
Alex locked Adaptation on the rising filament and started the climb again from the feet up, section by section, densifying every layer before allowing the next to rise.
The second cycle began.
