Zara closed the door with a firm push and turned the latch until it clicked into place.
She turned toward Alex.
Her eyes carried the same focused brightness they had held when she first told him she would teach him after breakfast.
"The first thing I want to teach you." she began
"It is—"
She stopped mid-sentence.
Instead of finishing the thought she turned toward the open windows and started walking across the room.
Alex frowned after her.
"You should finish what you are saying instead of stopping in the middle like that,"
"You do this every time you decide the demonstration is more important than the explanation."
Zara did not look back.
She reached the first window, drew it shut with a soft thud, and moved to the next without answering.
One by one the rectangles of morning light narrowed and vanished.
The sunlight that had filled the room only minutes earlier thinned, then faded, until the space sat in a soft, uneven dimness that made the edges of the furniture harder to trust.
Only when the last window was closed did she begin pulling the heavy curtains.
Alex watched the progressive darkening with mild curiosity rather than alarm.
The bond carried her calm certainty, so he simply waited.
"Are you trying to create the environment and the mood before we start training?" he asked.
"Because this is starting to look more like a stage setting than a lesson."
"It is necessary for what I am going to teach you first," Zara said without turning around.
Her voice stayed even, practical. "I think this will be the best way, and the easiest thing to start with,"
"You will understand in a moment, just watch."
"Alright," Alex said.
He folded his arms and simply watched.
Zara closed the last curtain.
The heavy fabric settled into place with a soft, final sound, and the room dropped into near-total darkness.
The last thin line of light disappeared under the hem of the cloth.
Alex expected the usual temporary blindness that came with sudden loss of light.
The grey wash that turned familiar shapes into suggestions.
It did not arrive.
The outlines of the furniture remained visible.
The door was still a clear rectangle against the wall.
The faint suggestion of the far corners stayed readable.
They were muted and softened but clear enough that he could have crossed the room without stumbling.
"I can still see," he said, speaking toward the place he thought Zara was standing.
"Not perfectly, well, not in the way I see in daylight,"
"But much more clearly than I should be able to in this kind of dark,"
"The shapes are still there."
A pair of arms slid around him from behind.
Alex startled hard for half a second.
His shoulders locked and his weight shifted forward on pure reflex.
Then the bond carried her presence in a clean, unmistakable pulse, warmth, familiarity, the exact emotional signature he had known for seven years, and the tension left him in a rush.
He recognized the weight of her against his back, the familiar pressure of her arms around his chest, the quiet warmth of her breath near the side of his neck.
He let out a short, surprised giggle that sounded younger than he preferred.
"I just finished synchronizing the Shadow Element this morning," he said.
"Of course I can see a little in the dark, that part is obvious, so the element is already answering..."
Zara’s voice came from just behind his ear, low and steady, close enough that he felt the words more than heard them.
"Seeing a little is not the same as seeing the way I do,"
"I want to know whether you can use the element itself to push that vision further,"
"Clear enough that darkness stops mattering entirely and clear enough that you might eventually handle the same skills I do without relying on instinct alone,"
"This is the simplest application of the Shadow Element for me,"
"It is the first thing the element ever answered when I reached for it,"
"I am going to teach it to you properly."
She released the hug and stepped away.
Alex could not hear her footsteps.
Whether that was Silence Skin or simple long practice or both, the result was the same.
The air did not carry the sound of movement.
He could not track her by sight either, once she left the space directly behind him the darkness swallowed the finer details of her outline.
But the bond remained open, and through it he felt her direction as clearly as if she had left a trail of warmth in the air.
The distance, the angle, the quiet certainty of her presence moving across the floor.
She stopped directly in front of him.
He knew the exact distance without needing to see her face.
Her voice arrived through the bond, clean and close, the same clear channel that had first opened under the cold water of the shower.
’Alex, try to feel the Shadow Element.’
Her hands settled on his chest a moment later, palms flat over the place where the Mana Heart sat.
The contact was firm and deliberate, anchoring his attention to the center of his own body rather than the darkness around them.
’Feel it the way you feel the bond,’ she continued through the link.
Her mental voice stayed calm, instructional, the same tone she used when correcting his stance during training.
’I am going to send you the sensation of how I use the element for vision,’
’The exact feeling of moving shadow toward the eyes and letting it settle there,’
’You need to take that feeling into your own body,’
’Right now, just focus on the feeling, you can try after you feel and understand it,’
’Afterwards, when you are trying to reciprocate it,’
’Move the Shadow Element the same way,’
’Guide it toward your eyes,’
’Make sure you do not force it or grab,’
’Just reciprocate what I sent and let it travel on its own path.’
Alex drew a slow breath and opened himself to the channel.
The bond widened the way it had when clear speech first appeared between them, the door that had once been half-closed now standing fully open.
He felt Zara gather something on her side of the link, a specific, practiced motion of will and element that he had never been able to observe from the outside.
It was precise and familiar to her.
But it was completely new to him.
She sent the first feeling across.
