Alex stepped out of the bathroom and the warm air of the outer room settled over the lingering chill on his skin.
Water still clung faintly to the ends of his black hair.
The tile behind him held the last echo of the cold shower, and the open doorway carried the softer heat of the living space he shared with the woman waiting on the other side.
He stopped.
Zara stood near the foot of the bed, watching him with narrowed black eyes.
She had changed while he was under the water.
A dark fur coat hung oversized on her frame, the soft black material swallowing her shoulders and reaching past her wrists in a way that made her look almost swallowed by it.
Around her neck sat a thick dark scarf, carefully wound high enough to cover the side of her throat and the marks he had left there in his sleep.
The scarf hid everything.
The coat hid the rest of her usual silhouette.
The morning light caught the edge of the fur and turned it into something almost living, dark and quiet and deliberate.
Neither of them spoke.
Alex’s gaze moved over her once, slow and deliberate.
A slight smirk began to pull at the corner of his mouth before he could stop it.
Pride flickered through him, quiet and warm and entirely unrepentant.
Seven years of her teasing, her knowing looks, her quiet victories whenever she managed to throw him off balance.
She had made him suffer in a hundred small, elegant ways.
The way she always stayed one step ahead.
This felt like the first real mark he had ever managed to leave in return.
Not planned or intentional, but real.
’She probably deserved at least this much for everything she put me through.’
The bond carried the thought as clearly as if he had spoken it aloud.
He felt her register it.
Felt the exact moment the pride in him registered in her.
Zara’s eyes narrowed further.
She felt the shift in him through the bond the same way he felt every small change in her.
The amusement, the quiet satisfaction, the smug little pulse of pride that he was not even trying to hide.
Her jaw tightened, the oversized coat shifted with the small movement of her shoulders.
’That look! That exact look on his face!’
He was still only a boy, only twelve years old.
He had no idea what those marks actually meant.
No idea of the weight they carried, the claim they suggested, the way anyone who understood the old customs of the continent would read them on a woman’s skin.
He was simply pleased with himself because he could feel her flustered heat through the bond and had decided it was a victory.
She needed to educate this child before he walked into the wider world and created a disaster.
Scandals, rumors, political messes that could reach even Vespera’s ears.
The thought of the Duchess learning what her son had done in his sleep made something cold crawl down Zara’s spine.
Vespera would not shout, maybe she would simply look at her with that quiet, terrifying calm and ask how it had been allowed to happen, or maybe she would just laugh it off, she couldn’t predict her reaction.
Zara would handle this herself later.
Alex finally broke the silence.
His voice was easy, almost casual, the carefree tone he wore when he was deliberately choosing not to look clinical.
"You look quite beautiful in that new attire of yours."
He began to walk.
Slow, circling her the way he sometimes circled an opponent in the training hall, except this time his eyes stayed on the coat, the scarf, the way the oversized fur framed her face and softened the sharp lines of her usual presence.
He took his time.
Completing the circuit with the unhurried focus of someone who had decided the assessment was important.
The soft pad of his bare feet against the floor was the only sound for a moment.
"The fur really suits you, dark enough to match your hair, and the scarf is a smart choice, it’s practical and covers everything that needs covering."
Zara’s patience ran out the moment the last word left his mouth.
She reached out without warning, pinched his ear between two fingers, and twisted with deliberate strength.
"Ow—!"
Alex’s body jerked sideways.
The sound that left him was pure, sharp, and entirely undignified.
Tears sprang to the corners of his eyes before he could stop them.
The bond carried the flash of pain straight to her, and he felt the brief, bright satisfaction that answered it on her side.
Zara held the pinch for a full second longer than necessary, then released him with a small, condescending tilt of her head.
The fur of the coat shifted again as she settled her weight.
"You should not be smug about this," she said, voice calm and cool and edged with the particular authority she used when she had decided a lesson needed delivering.
"You should be glad you are still a child,"
"That is the only reason I am letting this go,"
"If you were older, if you had done this to me unannounced while knowing exactly what it meant, you would be dreading the consequences right now,"
"Do you understand me, Alexander?"
He rubbed his ear, still wincing, but the smirk had only been knocked sideways, not erased.
Through the bond he could feel the sharp edge of her irritation sitting on top of the same flustered heat that had not fully left her since she woke.
The combination was almost entertaining and the new clarity of the bond made every layer of it impossible to miss.
"I understand you are still embarrassed," he answered, keeping his tone light even while his ear throbbed.
"And that the scarf is doing important work,"
"And that I am currently in danger of losing the ear if I keep talking about how well the coat fits you, okay, message received..."
Zara’s eyes narrowed another fraction, the bond carried a pulse of something that felt very much like she was considering whether the ear was worth the trouble of a second pinch, she chose restraint, barely.
"The bond," she said instead, cutting cleanly past the banter.
Her voice stayed even, but the urgency underneath it was clear through the link. "Alex, we need to talk about what happened to it, such clear voice and emotion,"
"Exact words instead of the old blur,"
"It has never worked like this before, not once in seven years,"
"Something changed last night, and I want to know what,"
"I want to know if it is permanent and I want to know if it can still be controlled."
Alex straightened settled into the more focused version of himself.
The clinical part of his mind had been waiting for this exact moment since he first heard her voice inside his skull under the cold water.
The bond hummed between them, open and present and still new enough that every small shift of attention registered like a physical touch.
"Let me check the system interface," he said.
"There might have been a notification,"
"I did not look at anything after the last night,"
"I was too busy trying not to think about...something...and then falling on the bathroom floor,"
"I should check now."
He reached for the familiar internal space where the interface lived, the quiet door that had opened for him years ago and never closed.
