By the time they reached the main square again the atmosphere of the Ashen Bazaar had changed. Demons who had stared with open challenge an hour earlier now stepped aside and lowered their heads.
Stalls that sold weapons had quietly covered their more aggressive wares. The red and green fires still burned, but the conversations around them were hushed and rapid.
The pit-wyrm hybrid waited exactly where they had left it, copper-and-gold eyes watching the square like a bored but loyal executioner. It rumbled low in its chest when Levi approached and then settled again.
Ravka was already there, four arms folded behind her back, a line of nervous street-bosses kneeling in the ash in front of her.
Korrak stood slightly apart, brass horns dimmed, living-shadow coat reduced to a quiet ripple around his shoulders.
Lucy surveyed the kneeling line with open amusement. "Look at that. Efficient management."
Vespera’s living eyes moved from face to face. "Some of them are still calculating odds. I can see it."
Serakel’s third eye glowed faintly. "Three of them are carrying concealed blades they think we will not notice. Adorable."
Isha’s slime formed a small, cheerful spike. "May I?"
"Later," Levi said.
He walked to the center of the square. The five women fanned out behind him. Gold light from the Sovereign Domain settled over the gathering like a quiet verdict.
Korrak stepped forward and dropped to one knee. "Master. Every street-boss who values continued breathing is present. Ledgers and keys have been collected. The outer contracts are being rewritten under your name as we speak."
Levi looked down the line of kneeling demons. Some kept their eyes on the ash. A few risked glances at the pit-wyrm hybrid and then very quickly returned their attention to the ground.
"Stand," Levi said.
They stood. One of them, a thin demon with too many joints and a mouth full of needle teeth, hesitated half a second longer than the others. Lucy’s blade cleared its sheath with a soft, deliberate sound. The demon finished standing at speed.
Levi let the silence stretch just long enough to become uncomfortable.
"The Ashen Bazaar answers to me now. The old tithes are void. The old feuds are suspended. Anyone who wishes to reopen either may do so in person, against me or against the five who walk with me. I recommend against it."
A low murmur moved through the watching crowd and died quickly.
Ravka spoke without raising her voice. "Two outer districts have not yet sent their bosses. The Bone-Knife Alley and the Whisper Vaults. They claim distance and old independence."
Lucy smiled, sharp and bright. "I was hoping someone would claim independence."
Vespera’s tone was almost polite. "Distance is not protection."
Serakel tilted her head. "The Whisper Vaults keep contracts written in living blood. I would like to see those."
Isha raised one slime-coated hand. "I vote we visit both. In either order. Or simultaneously. I can stretch."
The Reverend Mother Superior closed her eyes for a brief moment. "Of course you can."
Levi considered the options. The Sovereign Sigil pulsed once, steady and interested.
’Two holdouts. Good. The bazaar needs a clear example before the rest of the free courts decide to test the edges.’
"Bone-Knife Alley first," he said. "Ravka, Korrak, you will maintain order here. If anyone decides this is an opportunity for old business, the hybrid will handle the first dozen. The rest will wait for my return."
The pit-wyrm hybrid lifted its great head and made a sound that was not quite a growl and not quite a laugh. Several street-bosses flinched.
Ravka bowed. "The square will remain quiet, Master."
Korrak bowed lower. "The tower will not move without your word."
Levi turned toward the eastern avenue that led to Bone-Knife Alley. The five women fell in around him without needing instruction. Gold light moved with them. Demons cleared the path in a widening ripple of sudden manners.
Lucy walked with a spring in her step. "I give the alley three minutes before someone does something regrettable."
Vespera’s voice was cool. "You are optimistic. I give them ninety seconds."
Serakel’s third eye gleamed. "I am timing it."
Isha linked her arm through the Reverend Mother Superior’s again. "Bet on me throwing the first one. I have been practicing restraint and I hate it."
The Reverend Mother Superior did not bother removing the arm. "I am surrounded by children who can level city blocks."
"Affectionate children," Isha corrected.
Levi listened to them and felt the corner of his mouth threaten to rise.
’Engaging does not begin to cover it. The underground is more entertaining than the surface ever was.’
Bone-Knife Alley announced itself with the smell of old blood and sharpening stones. The street was narrower than the main avenues, lined with open workshops where demons forged blades that whispered and knives that remembered every cut they had ever made.
The moment the golden light of the Sovereign Domain reached the first workshop, the hammering stopped.
At the far end of the alley a group of heavily scarred demons had already formed a loose wall. Their leader, a female with bone blades growing directly from her forearms, stepped forward and planted both feet.
"You have the square and the high tower," she called. "You do not have the alley. Turn around while the option is still polite."
Lucy’s answering smile was radiant. "Ninety seconds was generous."
Vespera’s living eyes went cold. "I told you."
Serakel began the count under her breath, clearly amused.
Isha’s slime rose in eager little coils. "My turn?"
Levi kept walking. The golden barrier expanded just enough to make the air shimmer.
"No," he said. "My turn first."
The bone-bladed leader lowered her stance. The demons behind her drew steel that caught the green firelight in hungry lines.
The Ashen Bazaar’s next lesson was about to begin, and the Sovereign of Neverland intended to make it memorable.
...
The bone-bladed leader did not wait for a second invitation. She charged, forearm blades extended, aiming to take Levi’s throat and heart in the same motion.
Levi stepped inside the attack. The golden barrier flared just long enough to deflect both blades with a sharp metallic ring. His hand closed around her wrist. Gold light poured straight into her arm.

The leader’s eyes went wide. The bone blades growing from her forearms cracked and darkened. She tried to wrench free. Levi held on and forced the mark deeper.

She dropped to her knees hard enough to send up a puff of ash. The remaining bone blades crumbled to dull powder. Her voice came out rough.
"Master."
The demons behind her hesitated for half a second too long.
Lucy moved. Her blade took the first one across the thigh and dropped him. She spun, kicked the second in the knee, and put the edge of her sword against his throat before he finished falling.
"Stay," she told him cheerfully.
Vespera lifted one hand. Northern cold snapped outward. Two more demons froze mid-step, weapons locked in ice from elbow to tip. She walked past them as if they had become furniture.
"I am keeping these two quiet," she said. "They talk too much with their eyes."
