Chapter 1137 - 1139: Who Else to Spend on if Not on My Wife_1
In some distant corner, a flash of light caught her attention—it was a cold light, not bright enough to sting the eyes, but it had a suffocating murderous intent.
"Danger, there’s an assassin!" Bai Ruozhu cried out at once, and Jianqi immediately led his men to protect the Bai Family, but by that moment, the gleam had already left the bowstring and charged toward them.
With a clang of crisp sound, the sword Bo Qun held in front of his chest shook violently from the impact; it had hit him right in the chest, and he retreated three steps back, a mouthful of blood welling up, which he forcefully swallowed.
Because the group was just outside the City Gate, the soldiers guarding it were very close, and as soon as they heard the commotion, they immediately came to protect them. Chilling wind flashed as he pursued the direction from which the Dark Arrow had come.
The Bai Family members were all pale with fear, and Jiang Yichun also protectively held Bai Ruozhu, but they all understood that the Dark Arrow was aimed at Bo Qun.
"Marquis, are you alright?" Madam Bo asked, worriedly supporting Bo Qun.
Bo Qun’s complexion was somewhat unsightly, "I’m fine, it seems it was meant for me again."
Madam Bo showed a worried expression, "Who could it be? What should we do now?"
Even as steady as Madam Bo usually was, she was now somewhat flustered by the Dark Arrow.
Bai Ruozhu also looked towards Bo Qun, knowing that internal injuries were best self-treated, and she couldn’t help him much.
Bo Qun stepped forward and gave a salute towards Bai Ruozhu, "Ruozhu, you’ve saved me once again. Thank goodness you were quick to react and warned me just now."
Bai Ruozhu’s eyes shone coldly, "Once, they hurt my second brother with a Dark Arrow in the same way, but sadly I was not there to warn him. Therefore, Qisha Pavilion cannot be let off the hook!"
Bo Qun stiffened, "Are you suggesting it was that same ’Chasing Wind’ this time?"
"It seems likely from the arrow," Bai Ruozhu said.
Bo Qun’s face contorted with anger, "It’s about time to wipe out Qisha Pavilion entirely!"
Jiang Yichun spoke in a lowered voice, "This matter requires careful long-term planning. It’s not appropriate to speak rashly now. Without military forces at our disposal, it’s difficult to act, so we better be cautious."
Bai Ruozhu understood his point; it was mainly because he was about to go to Wucang Mountain, and it would be best to discuss these matters after his return from Wucang Mountain, but he didn’t say this to Bo Qun.
"Yes, we need to plan for the long-term," Bai Ruozhu agreed, nodding. She was indeed apt when it came to business, but this kind of matter, surrounding and dealing with assassins, was not something she dared to haphazardly take responsibility for.
At that moment, Chilling Wind returned, shaking his head at Jiang Yichun, indicating it was already too late to catch up.
Such an assassin, able to hide at a distance and shoot a Dark Arrow, would definitely have fled at once after shooting, even if unsuccessful, always seeking another opportunity. By the time they got there, the assailant would have already been long gone.
"Marquis Bo, perhaps you should return to your Residence and rest for a while. Your health is of utmost importance; everything else can be discussed slowly." Bai Yihong said, noticing Bo Qun’s pallid complexion, advising from the side.
Bo Qun nodded. He was also angered—this was the second time in a short period that he had been targeted. If it hadn’t been for Bai Ruozhu’s warning today, would he be lying in a pool of blood with that Dark Arrow embedded in his chest?
This place is not suitable for a long stay; everyone returned to the city. At a street corner, there sat a young man sipping cool tea, dressed in plain clothes with a tattered headscarf on his head.
This was a very ordinary young commoner who wouldn’t draw any attention while seated there; no one noticed that although he lowered his head to drink tea, his eyes followed Bai Ruozhu, who had entered the City Gate with Jiang Yichun and others.
His eyes slightly narrowed; this woman had thwarted him several times, and he was very curious as to how she detected his presence earlier, given she was clearly not a person of profound inner strength. He was even more curious to see if she could detect him when he was nearby.
Years of life as an assassin had honed his Heart Nature; no matter how angry or eager he was to twist Bai Ruozhu’s neck, his emotions wouldn’t fluctuate, nor would he emit even a wisp of murderous intent.
Bai Ruozhu and her group boarded the horse carriage and left; she didn’t glance at the young man, hadn’t even noticed him, much less imagined he was the notorious assassin, Chasing Wind.
Three days later, the emperor secretly ordered Jiang Yichun to lead a group of Horsemen to Wucang Mountain, bringing Jiao Bingqin to verify the truth about the Wu family descendant’s blood unlocking secret she had spoken of.
"Wife, how about a smile? Wucang Mountain isn’t too far; I’ll be back in a few days," Jiang Yichun said as he picked up a lock of hair from her cheek, twining it around his index finger.
Lady, your tender touch has transformed steel to soft silk around your finger. She wasn’t a delicate, tender-hearted woman, yet she had long turned his once cold heart into pliable affection.
Bai Ruozhu gave him a sidelong glance and didn’t speak; she was indeed upset, not angry with him, just unhappy about this matter. The thought of him leaving the Capital was already troublesome; now, constantly being with Jiao Bingqin simply made her more annoyed.
"I won’t let Jiao Bingqin follow me. The emperor has also assigned Shadow Guards to protect her. If you’re really upset, just keep her confused all the time, and she won’t be able to stir up any trouble, right?" Jiang Yichun added.
"That actually sounds like a good idea," Bai Ruozhu said, pouting, but she couldn’t really do such a thing. If all those Shadow Guards knew she treated the emperor’s people like that, the emperor might get angry. And if Jiao Bingqin got poisoned, what if her blood didn’t work?
With a pleasing expression, Jiang Yichun took out a brocade box and handed it to Bai Ruozhu, saying, "This is for you."
He sure had learned the modern man’s trick for dealing with his wife - giving gifts now and then. His intuition wasn’t too shabby.
Bai Ruozhu took the brocade box and opened it, only to be stunned; inside lay a diamond necklace!
One must know that in Danliang Country at this time, diamonds were unheard of. They were like Western mirrors, only obtainable from the Western Regions or Rakshasa Country. But due to the long journey and rare trade, on top of scarcity making them precious, the items were exceptionally expensive. Just like Western mirrors, an average well-off family wouldn’t even think of owning one.
How many gold pieces would a diamond necklace like this cost!
"This must be so expensive? You’re wasting too much money!" Bai Ruozhu couldn’t help but complain, yet her eyes shone brightly with obvious delight for the diamond necklace.
Jiang Yichun started to laugh, his mouth curving up high, "You are my wife, who else should I buy for if not you? Isn’t silver meant to be spent by you?"
Bai Ruozhu chuckled, her initial displeasure fading by half. She gave him a playful scowl, "When did you learn to be so sweet-talking? I remember when we first met, you said you couldn’t save any silver. Don’t tell me you’ve been buying things for some other woman all this time?"
Jiang Yichun’s previously lifted corners of the mouth instantly drooped. His entire face stiffened, "How could that be? It’s just that I’ve gotten used to spending generously on living expenses, plus some Rewards or for my subordinates."
Watching Bai Ruozhu’s face grow increasingly grim, Jiang Yichun felt depressed enough to murder someone. He only wanted to cheer up his wife, so why couldn’t he explain himself clearly?
Suddenly, he spotted a sly glint in Bai Ruozhu’s eyes, and with a swift move, he pressed down on her, "Alright, daring to tease your husband, let’s see how I’ll deal with you!"
